If he sounds especially tired on Friday morning, it's because he spent all night on the street, part of a charitable event for Covenant House. The idea is to experience what the homeless go through on a daily - and nightly - basis. It's the second time he's done it in two years.
The night involves having the same dinner as those who sleep rough inside the shelter and then heading outside into the dark to sleep using only cardboard blankets, with proceeds from donors going to the charity
He admits he was lucky this year - it was a relatively warm night out there, with temperatures that didn't dip below freezing.
And he says he's likely to be back to try it again next year.

I wonder that since this particular event involves celebs and company execs, that do they have someone watching over them while they’re sleeping on the street? I imagine they would, but for a real authentic experience, maybe not!

Do really have to spend one night sleeping outside to know what it might be like to sleep outside on the street?
In my reporting career I have done similar things covering a story when I could not get a hotel room.
I can use my imagination about what it might be like to sleep homeless.
I am reminded of the story the great actor Lawrence Olivier told about making the movie "Marathon Man" with Dustin Hoffman.
The American star stayed up a couple of nights in a row, didn't shower and kept the same clothes on. This was so he would how his character would feel when he was being pursued by a murderous Nazi.
Olivier says he told Hoffman he didn't need to do all that, adding "why not just try acting, my boy?"
