The CBC's Plan To Expand Audience: More Channels & More Westerners

It's not exactly what you might expect them to do, given the hostility that sometimes meets the CBC. It plans to seek audience gains in sometimes hostile places like Saskatchewan and Alberta. But that's the game plan, as the Corp. looks towards the future for more ears and eyes.

"The plan says the public broadcaster also plans to hire journalists to cover 15 to 20 communities where it currently has little or no presence, and to invest in Northern Canada.

CBC/Radio-Canada also plans to expand its network of content creators and influencers “to diversify viewpoints and perspectives and increase contributions for digital platforms,” the document says.

The plan proposes offering more content on third-party platforms like YouTube and TikTok aimed at reaching younger audiences and newcomers, and expanding the number of CBC/Radio-Canada ad-supported streaming television channels."

Why are we, the viewers and listeners and the owners of CBC Radio-Canada never asked what we would like to see and hear. I have lots of suggestions and ideas for them and I am sure many on SONWY have too.
How hard is it in this day in age to put out a survey?

Re: The CBC's Plan To Expand Audience: More Channels & More Westerners

There's been a lot of blowback to the plans they announced last week, with demands that they hire more local reporters for small towns that normally don't get covered.

According to former CRTC vice-chair Peter Menzies, the CBC needs to talk to the folks it's trying to reach.

"if you’re talking to people in Moose Jaw, you sound like somebody who knows what Moose Jaw is all about,” he added.

“Unless you’re sort of embedded in your community and you understand how it thinks, listens, how it hears things, you’re not going to be successful.”

The CBC’s new plan to grow, win back audiences is ambitious but vague, experts say

I believe CBC/RC does have surveys fairly regularly.  But do they actually follow through on suggestions, or do they tend to focus on areas they had already decided on.  I am sure they don't consider the viewers and listeners that always say to close them down.

With many small town papers that have either cut back or closed down, improved radio coverage and reporting for these areas would be a good plan.
