"The World's Most Incredible Broadcast Family"

The headline from the Hockey News is a bit hyperbolic, but it does highlight a truly remarkable dynasty. If you have the last name of Albert in the U.S., chances are you're a sports broadcaster. And a good one.

The story highlights the legacy of a family that's pretty amazing. From Marv Albert and his brothers Al and Steve to Marv's son Kenny, there has rarely been a group of relatives so adept at doing play-by-play of different major league sports on TV and radio.

The first time I heard Marv was doing the Rangers games on WNBC-AM in the 70s. He was great even back then. It is simply amazing how many family members went into the same profession. And outside of Foster Hewitt and his son Bill, the voices of Hockey Night In Canada for so many years, I can't think of another sports dynasty quite like this one. (Well, maybe Dan and Ben Shulman on the Jays broadcasts or the Careys in the States. But four members of the same family? That's unique.)

Steve Albert outlines how the brothers set out on their quest to become kings of the game early in life, by making their home TV set a "broadcast booth."

"It consisted of a small black and white tv complete with rabbit antenna on top.

"And three rickety old folding chairs, a folding card table and on top of the table sat a large reel to reel tape recorder, a record player and two large price-marking pencils from my father's grocery store.

"We practiced in the summer on Yankees games, turning the volume down so we could do our own play by play. And we would rotate assignments. One would do play by play, another would control the sound effects which included the sound of a baseball crowd."

They've rarely been off the air since.

New Yorkers woke up to three generations of the Gambling family with "Rambling With Gambling" on WOR-AM for 75 years.
