I know there are a lot of fans of the Rogers-made TV show "Hudson & Rex," the subject of a mysterious recent ad in the Toronto Star. And sure, there have been dog shows like Lassie and The Littlest Hobo before (going back to Rin Tin Tin in the early days of TV.)
You might think those were the inspirations for "Rex." But then I came across this very obscure Canadian show that was produced for CTV for one very unsuccessful season back in 1988. It was called "Katts and Dog," and the logline in TV Guide's Fall preview issue sounds suspiciously like the show currently being made in Newfoundland.
There's even an eerie parallel between the original Rex and the original dog. Both were German Shepherds. And while the first Rex was played by a four-legged pooch with the unlikely name of Diesel von Burgimwald, (who sadly passed away), the Dog in the CTV version had the name of Rudolph von Holstein III, playing a pooch called "Rudy."
You have to admit that's quite a coincidence. Is it possible Rex's creators recalled this obscure show and based their show on it thinking no one would remember the original? I can't answer that question, but here's the preview from TV Guide back in 1988. See what you think.

While YouTube doesn't have a complete episode of this show, there are snippets to see what it looked like:

Good observations RA. I have some "Inside Baseball" knowledge on this one. The series Katts & Dog, had an executive producer named Herbert B. Leonard. I knew Mr. Leonard personally. Due to Canadian tax shelter and Cancon certification, Mr. Leonard was listed only as "Executive Producer". But that's not quite accurate. He had a much larger role on that show. If you search IMDB you will find that Bert Leonard was a producer of Rin Tin Tin back as far as 1955. There were several Rin Tin Tin sequels over the decades. Bert also produced Route 66, The Naked City and many other TV series during the "golden age" of TV Drama. Mr. Leonard's exit from Canadian television is a rather sad story that I won't recount here. But he was the "real deal" in terms of legendary TV producers., I worked with him for a few years. While working with him in LA, I had breakfast at the St. James Club in LA, and I asked him about some of his casting "regrets". I seem to recall that he passed on Dustin Hoffman, when casting Route 66. He also was a big fan of "Leonardo"..who was not a household name at that time. I awkwardly asked "Leonardo who???" He explained to me the actor was Leonard Di Caprio - who was a relatively young teen at the time.

How was Katts and Dog a Canadian flop and very unsuccessful? It ran 5 years on CTV, from 1988 to 1993 and had 106 episodes. Likely it's in syndication somewhere!
Another slam against Canadian programming, with not a lot of research, and a misleading heading for the post. The series also ran on the US Family Channel as Rin Tin Tin: K9 Cop and on US network ION.
Hudson & Rex is based on the Austrian/Italian program Kommissar Rex and had its debut in 1994. Katts and Dog ran prior to Kommissar Rex and finished it's run on CTV one year prior to the debut of K Rex in Europe.
This very unsuccessful "Canadian flop" also had a TV movie made in 1991, Officer Katts and Rudy Visit Paris. In the US it was called Rin Tin Tin and the Paris Conspiracy...
