War Of Words Erupt Over Buck Martinez & Other Baseball Broadcasters

Talk about spoil sports.

There is a war of words going on between several baseball broadcasters and it all started when Sportsnet TV icon Buck Martinez slagged the Yankees, after the Bronx Bombers got massacred by Detroit in a series last week.

"You know, the Yankees — they're not a good team," Martinez said when finding out New York was getting bludgeoned by the Detroit Tigers. "I don't care what their record is. They have a lot of wild pitches, they make a lot of mistakes in the field, they don't run the bases very well. If they don't hit home runs, they don't have a chance to win."

It won't surprise you to know that New York commentators did not take that well. In fact, earlier in the season, longtime Yankee broadcaster Michael Kay threw his own bean ball at the team.

“The Blue Jays are not a first-place team, I’m sorry,” Kay said definitively... "They’re not playing great baseball. I’m sorry, they’re not.”

As if that wasn't enough, now the Orioles crew is getting in on the act, after the Jays came back to beat the Baltimore Birds in late inning heroics on Saturday. It started when Toronto fans booed the Orioles' pitcher for throwing over to first base to try and pick off a Jays' runner.

“I gotta be real, real careful what I say… but sometimes, we had some major questions about the baseball IQ of some Canadians,” [Orioles colour commentator Bruce] Roberts said. “At times it felt like maybe they enjoyed or knew more about hockey than baseball.”

Fortunately, Toronto is done with the Yanks for the season. But they should all probably quit while the Jays are ahead.

The Michael Kay thing was not in response to Buck...he made those comments back in July when the Yankees came into town in first place and left trailing the Jays. Buck's comments about the Yankees were made earlier this week, during the Astros series, when Buck found out that the Yankees were losing big to the Tigers.

Actually, I realized that and altered the thread but I think you saw an earlier draft. Thanks for the correction, though. Either way, it surprises me when supposedly seasoned announcers take aim at each other or the fans of other teams. Does not seem very professional to me.

I believe I did see an earlier draft....the Michael Kay comments did lead to an entire back-and-forth with Jamie Campbell, for those who may not have been aware of it in real time. And Kay, who also hosts a daily radio show on ESPN New York, previously went after Mets fans, so that appears to be part of his shtick.

Booing the pitcher during a pick off move isn't a Canadian thing. It happens in every Major League ballpark as this analyst should know (being a former player).  Just the same, I have always wondered why fans...anywhere..boo the move. It is all part of the game. Just the same..lighten up people.

The Orioles broadcaster, likely not expecting the backlash his comments got, apologized for them during the Toronto-Baltimore game on Sunday.

Hear it here.

Now Ernie Clement has added fuel to the fire. Good thing we're done with the Orioles. It just keeps getting more ugly.

I am surprised the war of words happened between these two teams as Ben Wagner, former Jays radio voice, is with the O's.
If this was between the players, their bulletin boards would be filled.

Yes I know, but I am sure the two crews speak.
