The Onion: Where Everything Old Is New Again

I know the satirical site The Onion has a lot of fans here, but they did one thing that wasn't making fun of the past - they turned out a print edition. And to the surprise of many, it's been a huge success, garnering over 50,000 subscribers to date. And it's going strong, despite the retrograde update.

The CBC spoke to its executive editor about how they think - and why they're ink.

The Onion turned back to print. It brought in over 50,000 new subscribers

This as more and more Gen Zers are asking for cassette tapes and vinyl
You still can't beat a nice glossy hard copy magazine for the tactile satisfaction they bring.
Also remember Mad magazine's "fold in" back page where you had to physically fold the page together to see a funny image and joke.?
Can't get that on a screen!.

I dumped the E-reader. Yeah, it was convenient, but there are just too many screens.

Re: The Onion: Where Everything Old Is New Again

One only has to look at Disney Plus to understand why the old way still has its advantages: fans of the Willow TV show, sequel to the 80s film, weren't too happy when it was removed completely from the service, and with no plans on releasing the first and only season on DVD or bluray, it has been lost to time and no longer watchable.

Or when studios or directors make alterations to a movie or TV show already streaming, a change that fans may not care for, there's no way to view their preferred version. So I think people will go back to physical and older media to know that they can always access that content as it was originally released and not subject to the whims of some executive or director if that content is online.

I couldn’t agree more with you newsguy1! I still love magazines and lament the fact that there really isn’t a good magazine store in my part of Toronto, as the Chapters closed, and that was “the place” for mags. Fortunately I’m heading to the UK and they still love the “tactile satisfaction” magazines bring, so I’m stocking up!

The print version of The Onion included a very knowledgeable parody on King Crimson recently.    It looks like band founder Robert Fripp liked it.
