Veteran Toronto broadcaster Paul Cross has confirmed he's leaving Humber College, where he's been teaching radio and media for 21 years. His last day at the school is June 30th.
He doesn't say why he's decided now is the time to go, but you have to wonder if declining enrollment and interest in radio among younger age groups may be one possible reason.
As he notes in his blog:
"As I often tell my students – among all kinds of other stuff that comes out – I’m a big believer in knowing when it’s time to go. There was a really liberating moment for me one day back in 1985, I tell them, when I returned from my first extended vacation and heard glowing reviews from my bosses about how well my CKPR Radio news team had performed while I was away. I knew right away. I could go now. It was time to go.
A few months later – although that’s another story for another time – I was being flown and chauffeured and wined and dined and found myself “auditioning” live on 1050 CHUM in Toronto. "
He's also worked for CFRB, AM640, Q107 and Broadcast News (CP). But he will continue his podcast so that great voice will still be heard online.
I always liked his on air presentation and I wish him well.
Knowing when it’s time to go: I am retiring from my day job, but I am not going away.
