With the death of Brian Wilson, some old stories about the Beach Boys have resurfaced. One of them involves one of the group's greatest songs being banned by some radio stations in the U.S. The tune was the incredible "God Only Knows" and in states that were conservative, the mention of God in the title of a song was considered almost sacrilegious and many stations refused to play it.
It became a hit despite the boycott, but here's a factoid you may never have known. Imagine if this had happened to help the record sell.
"Brian Wilson had anticipated that the title might cause problems. In fact, he briefly considered changing it to something less likely to provoke a reaction. One idea reportedly floated was 'Fred Only Knows', though it never made it past the discussion stage, and, in the end, Wilson kept the original name, confident in the strength of the material."
