The Most Bizarre & Disturbing PSA Ever Heard On Radio

Think you've listened to some disturbing public service announcements in the past on your radio? You haven't heard this one. It's apparently been airing late at night on a Tucson, Arizona-area FM station for at least two years and now someone has finally noticed.

Incredibly, it's a warning to pedophiles in the area and contains the following copy:

“Never keep paper pictures, tapes or films of naked juveniles where anyone else can find them... Always use an external drive and hide it where nobody will ever find it... A public service message from the CAVE 97.7 FM.”

While it's certainly against the law to possess or look at such disgusting images, it's apparently not illegal to tell perpetrators to hide their stash on the radio. Especially if the owner is more than a little nutty. Frankly, I thought at first this was some kind of strange and not very amusing April Fool's joke. But the story on it is dated May 8th.

More here.

After reading the story and watching the video, I became curious about the format of CAVE-FM. Turns out it's a classic old time country station. I'm not entirely sure what that says about those who listen to that music - you'll have to decide for yourself if there's any significance.

""Lotsof said there’s a difference between distribution and creation of child porn and possession."The difference is one case, you're molesting children and abusing them, causing children to do things that are not natural for children to do and the other case, they're just possessing pictures. There's no connection between those two,” he said.""

Wow. Paging Keith Olbermann.

Re: The Most Bizarre & Disturbing PSA Ever Heard On Radio

Despite what the article says, I can't believe this isn't illegal. I'm not a lawyer (and I don't play one on TV) but surely a clever prosecutor could come up with something - aiding and abetting, for instance, or accessory after the fact. Imagine if they ran a PSA that advised, "If you've just robbed a bank, here are some suggestions to make sure you don't get caught. Don't spend the money right away. And try and launder it before getting it into circulation - like at a casino."

There's no way the FCC or law enforcement would let that go. How this was allowed to air for so long with no one noticing is truly puzzling.

However, I would add that if the owner is so dedicated to this cause, then why doesn't he put the spot on in the middle of morning or afternoon drive? After all, if there's nothing wrong with it, then why not let everyone hear it instead of hiding it in the middle of the night?

Ironically, the station lists the rules for submitting PSAs on its website, with a strange number of instructions, including the very self serving, "We will not give free plugs to businesses that are set up for profit unless they are CAVE sponsors." I wonder if NAMBLA is one of them?

Nice way to fulfill your public service obligations.

So now that it's gotten all this publicity, authorities have finally launched an official investigation and the PSA has been pulled off the air. A copy of it has surfaced online, of course. If you're still curious, you can hear the whole thing here.
