She had a series of huge hits and one of her songs, "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face," taken from Clint Eastwood's "Play Misty For Me," was the #1 song of 1972.
Follow-ups like "Killing Me Softly With His Song," did equally well. (Her song, "Jessie" was a lesser hit, but always one of my favourites.)
Sadly, Roberta Flack, the voice behind those classics, has been silenced. Flack died on Monday, after suffering from ALS, an illness that made it impossible for her to sing and forced her retirement from the music biz. But she leaves behind some amazing works, including her duet with Donny Hathaway on "Where is the Love."
Flack was 88.
