CJOY-AM 1460 Guelph

I recently drove by this stations attractive studio on Speedvale Ave. in Guelph. I occasionally listened in to it when I lived in Kitchener many years ago. At that time it was a full service operation with a middle of the road music format.

It was about 4:10 pm on Tuesday February 11, 2025 when I tuned into CJOY. I thought there would be a live drive show. There was an occasional traffic / weather update but no announcer. I was surprised that this coveted time slot appeared to be automated.

Is there any live programming on CJOY?

Re: CJOY-AM 1460 Guelph

A thread put up here earlier this week speculated on the demise of CJOY. Will it happen? So far, it hasn't. But there are signs that 1460 may not be long for this world.

It must make a tiny profit.

CJOY's transmitter site is just south of Guelph and occupies a significant parcel of land. Close to this are many high value homes. The land would probably be quite valuable. They also have their FM tower tower there so if the land was sold the FM would have to be moved.

I think of how successful CJBQ 800 in Belleville appears to be. CJOY has a decent coverage zone in a much higher populated area. Is there no path forward? Sad to see another AM station in this predicament.

Re: CJOY-AM 1460 Guelph

CJBQ's success is purely momentum. A small market where the same clients have been buying time for decades....in a market where that's the same for every station.

CJOY doesn't have that luxury. There's absolutely nothing they can do to turn the ship around. Neither CJBQ or CJOY are going to gain revenue; CJBQ's just starting from a better position.

You may be correct but there is a difference; I believe CJBQ is locally owned and operated by Quinte Broadcasting. They have three stations to take care of. On the other hand CJOY is no longer locally owned / operated. Does this make any difference? I think so. When stations were locally owned the owners often lived and made their living in the community.

Re: CJOY-AM 1460 Guelph

Maybe they should swich the format to talk.
Or, better idea.
Majic should apply to the CRTC for HD radio and put CJOY on an HD2 subchannel.

CJOY no longer has a morning show or an afternoon drive drive show. They do have traffic reports. According to their website Dan Allaire covers weekday mid-days (10AM-2PM), but it will be voice tracked I expect. He does mornings on Boom in Cornwall. They still cover the Guelph Storm games.

Lost to history - CJOY vs. CKFH, 1957.

Re: CJOY-AM 1460 Guelph

Now, with only sports games, CJOY's better off as an hd2 subchannel if the transmiter for majic can handle HD radio and corus applies.
Corus has made it like a computer.
How come the CRTC's hard on small broadcasters when that happens but not corus?

With such a relatively small audience, why would Corus bother?

All very true.
