New YouTube Site Traces The History Of A Legendary L.A. Top 40 Station

No, it's not KHJ, which is perhaps the most famous. It's the sort of successor to that classic rocker, a place called KTNQ in Los Angeles. For a few years in the 70s, 10Q (at 1020 on the dial) took over from KHJ as one of the most creative and innovative Top 40 stations in the U.S.

But because we're in Canada, we never got a chance to hear it.

Until now.

A new YouTube site not only includes aircheck samples, but tells the story of some unusual philosophies the station used to attract those disgruntled with other outlets going a bit more album oriented. And the place attracted some equally incredible talent, including names you may know, like The Real Don Steele, Charlie Tuna, Machine Gun Kelly and Beaver Cleaver. (Cleaver was not Jerry Mathers, but Ken Levine, who went on to an amazing TV career as a writer, director and producer on shows like M*A*S*H, Cheers, Frasier and The Simpsons.)

But it's not just airchecks. The videos attempt to explain the thinking behind the formatics and how they contributed to the overall on air sound. (For example, this video outlines how jocks ending and beginning their shows would appear on each other's programs to make the shift changes less obvious, a technique sometimes known as a "crossover.")

New Ten-Q website lets radio fans hear KTNQ AM, one of LA’s best ’70s-era stations

So thank you (or should that be 10Q?) to the former employee who thought this up.

It's not for everyone, but a fascinating look back at a station most of us in this part of the world never really got to hear. But I did get the T-shirt!
