What's With The Missing Channel On Roy Green's Bumper Music?

This is not the first time I've heard this on the soon-to-be-extinct Roy Green Show. In several bumper music intros on the show, which is being produced out of CKNW in Vancouver, it's very clear there is a second track missing. For instance, they just played Van Morrison's "Brown Eyed Girl," a huge hit and a very well known track. It's impossible not to know what it sounds like, even in mono.

And yet, when they played it as a rejoin to the show around 2:30 PM Sunday, it was obvious it sounded nothing like the original because part of the track was missing. I heard the same thing on Saturday, when they played Norman Greenbaum's "Spirit In The Sky intro," another famous tune. But it sounded totally different with only half the track playing.

I've heard this occasionally before in this show and I've always wondered: how is this possible? Why wouldn't the full track, the one every listener is familiar with, play over the air? What is the cause of this and are they even aware of it? If it wasn't a famous song, you might not notice. But when it is, it stands out like a sore - um, ear.

They're probably making it mono by only playing the left or right track, rather than combining them

I have noticed this happening on AM740 a few times and considered letting them know, but by the time they read the email, it will be the next day. Really noticed it just before Christmas, “Get It On” by T.Rex was playing, and part of the rhythm guitar was missing, if that makes sense. It must be an AM radio thing as I haven’t ever noticed it on FM.

But why would they do that? It makes no sense that it would happen and only on certain songs.

I've heard this before. A very long time ago when I was only dreaming of a radio career, I remember calling CFTR to tell them they were playing a version of "California Dreaming" by the Mamas and the Papas on air that buried the vocals and only left the background in the front.

They had no idea it was happening on air but to their credit, they fixed it.

My guess is Green's producers have no idea it's happening. And the fact the bumpers are so short may mean they don't really care.

Not intentional, and it depends where in the audio chain it's happening for the producer to notice.

And it does make sense that you'd only notice with some songs. The ones you mentioned have very distinct stereo mixes, which was way more common with songs of that era.
