She was famous for her many Broadway performances. But she's probably best known to TV viewers as the main waitress in the CBS show "Alice," based on the movie "Alice Doesn't Live Here Anymore." It ran for nine seasons.
She had only recently discovered she had lung cancer and though she was still active in Hollywood playing roles, it took her quickly at the age of 87.

The cast from the TV show M*A*S*H absolutely hated Gary Burghoff and were happy when he decided to leave the show. Amazing when you consider what a sympathetic character Radar O'Reilly was. Or as Hawkeye once called him "a puppy of a person."
