An Incredible Chance To Listen To Some Long Unheard Rock Radio History

Back in the late 60s, KHJ Los Angeles aired the first "History of Rock and Roll," a great documentary about the music most of us grew up with. They updated it a few times and it was last aired in 1978. It's been unheard since then.

Until now.

Beginning Dec. 26th, Boxing Day, this amazing 52 hour-long special is being rerun commercial free on Top 40 Hit Clock, a terrific free streaming audio service that also boasts some of the best sound on the Internet.

Because of the length, it's being divided over several days.

"The 1978 version of “The History of Rock And Roll” will air on the Top-40 Hit Clock, starting at noon on December 26th for five hours each day, concluding on Sunday, January 5."

But that's not all. They'll also be airing a special on the making of the show, which has never been broadcast before and features pioneer Bill Drake talking about the program and his producer explaining how they created some of the elements featured in the doc. That airs at noon (PT) right before the reroll of the long unheard show begins. (I think that's noon Pacific, which would make it 3 PM our time, but best to check in early to be sure.)

Definitely a must hear.

Re: An Incredible Chance To Listen To Some Long Unheard Rock Radio History

By the way, if you're into airchecks, you can't do much better than the Cruisin series of albums. A few sites offer them up for free, including this one, and the quality of the unscoped broadcasts is amazing. (There is some question how many were actually real, but there's no doubt of the talent on display.)

Definitely worth a background listen if nothing else. The quality, as mentioned, is incredible.

Here's the list:

1955: Jumping George Oxford, KSAN, San Francisco
1956: Robin Seymour, WKMH, Detroit
1957: Joe Niagara, WIBG Philadelphia
1958: Jack Carney, WIL St. Louis
1959: Hunter Hancock, KGFJ, Los Angeles
1960: Dick Biondi, WKBW Buffalo
1961: Arnie Ginsburg, WMEX Boston
1962: Russ Knight, KLIF Dallas
1963: B. Mitchell Reed, WMCA
1964: Johnny Holliday, WHK Cleveland
1965: Robert W. Morgan, KHJ Los Angeles
1966: Pat O'Day, KJR Seattle
1967: Dr. Don Rose, WQXI Atlanta
1968: Johnny Dark, WCAO Baltimore
1969: Harv Moore, WPGC Washington D.C.
1970: Kris Eric Stevens, WLS Chicago.

These aren't actual airchecks, but re-creations done many years after the fact.

Some interesting background can be found on the comments section on the bottom of this page...

The last edition was in 1981. It was heard locally on WPHD.

There's also another one featuring Porky Chedwick at WAMO Pittsburgh, but without a specific year.

I wish they had gone deeper into the '70s. We might have heard Jack Armstrong!
