Subchannel Stations: The Radio Broadcasts You Didn't Know Were There

Not quite FM stereo and not quite HD. These subchannels were once used to hide signals most us never knew were there. And you likely couldn't get them even if you did.

"A single FM station could deliver its main program, plus a bonus low-fidelity mono channel for various purposes. This facility was used for all kinds of obscure uses. Some broadcasters delivered background music for piping into department stores and the like, while others created special channels reserved for reading-for-the-blind organizations."

Re: Subchannel Stations: The Radio Broadcasts You Didn't Know Were There

Back in my days of C band satellite there were vendors that also sold SCA receivers. They had nothing to do with C band, it just seemed the same folks sold both technologies. The SCA units were relatively expensive and I never pursued that part of the radio hobby.

I would be interested in how many if any Southern Ontario stations transmitted SCA content.
