The podcast world has become very crowded in the last couple of years, probably largely due to the pandemic, I know a couple of people who got into it but since bailed. Good on Bob McCown for giving it a shot and good luck on his next project.

A source says McCown's former co-host John Shannon is about to launch a replacement podcast alongside a former TSN broadcaster.

Toronto Mike also seems to make a go of his podcast. Palma Pasta has been sponsoring him for years.

I guess so. They did get in early. I would like to see the numbers. All these poscasters would go back to a regular paying gig in radio in one second.

I suspect H&F are just doing it as a hobby, along with many others.
At least Jesse and Gene admitted right from the get go that podcasting is just a hobby for them.

Well they always seem to have between 5 and 10 paying sponsors so I think it's more than a hobby.

How much would these sponsors pay per year for such a niche audience? $10,000? $20,000?

I produce Humble and Fred's podcast (as well as my own, Toronto Mike'd). Humble and Fred make a healthy adult Toronto salary from sponsors of their show, and have been doing so for over a decade now.
It's not a hobby.

Just by sheer coincidence, I happened to hear Hi Fi Radio on AM640 Saturday night, a financial infomercial which I almost never listen to. Humble Howard was on as a guest talking about investments, when the subject turned to his podcast. He noted they're been doing it for 13 years and said it was making him a very good living.

How much is Ridley Funeral Home paying you? That's a very conservative business which doesn't need to advertise that much.

These examples of a few podcast hosts making it are few and far between. There are millions of hosts and like I pointed out in the Dean Blundell post, the art of being a content creator is not as easy as it seems.
I am sad to see the Bobcat hanging up the headphones.

Here's Friday's episode of Toronto Mike'd. It's Dave Hodge's annual visit to my home studio to unveil his 100 favourite songs of the calendar year. It's awesome, and this episode has five paying sponsors.
Humble and Fred also have several paying sponsors, including such national brands as Kelseys and Bodog.
Nobody said it was easy, but don't assume no independent podcasts in this country are making money.

McCown and Blundell had sponsors as well.

There are well known broadcasters who can't make a go of it. You are not exactly a big name in the business. Were you ever in the business?

Cash, whether Mike has or has not been in the "business" of pure radio is irrelevant. He is absolutely in the new business of communications in one of the new avenues of the medium. He was an early adopter of a new technology, saw an opening in the market, and took the risk to leave his job and start his own company. That is impressive in my books. Who cares if he ever worked in radio? He produces an excellent show of his own along with many interesting podcasts.

That's fine. My point is that a podcast with 3, 4, or 5 local sponsors and no national appeal is not a big enterprise. It takes a massive amount of hits to make decent money on Spotify or Apple. He doesn't have the name recognition for such. That's my point. I suspect he is making money on the industry as a whole as a consultant or on the technical side which is fine. All the power to him. But don't pretend that a podcast he does from his basement with local personalities is making hundred of thousands of dollars. As someone stated above, it's more or less a hobby. Which is fine.

Actually cash, torontomike is a big name in the business, possibly one of the best known podcasters in Canada. Whether or not he was ever in the business is irrelevant as he’s sure making a go of it now. As for the well known broadcasters who can’t make a go of podcasting, maybe they should get some pointers from someone who does make a go of it, like torontomike.

For the record, I've never worked a day in radio. So no, I've never been in the business.
I was a digital marketing manager for B2B software companies who ran the Toronto Mike blog on the side. Then, in 2006, I produced the very first Humble and Fred podcast and when we started doing that daily in 2011 I decided to leave my comfort zone and start my own show.
Tomorrow Mike Richards visits for episode 1595, I just hosted the 17th TMLX event at Palma's Kitchen (listen here - you'll hear Mike Eppel, Larry Fedoruk, Kevin Shea, Dave Charles, Peter Gross, Alan Zweig, Blair Packham, Brad Bradford and many others) and there have been well over 1 million downloads in 2024.
Yes I make money, yes it's still growing, yes there's an amazing FOTM community and many people who contribute to this very forum, from David Marsden to John Donabie to Roger Ashby to Doug Thompson, have been over for chats.
And while I'm here, Mike Stafford will return in 2025. Stay tuned.
