CBS News Does Rare Story On A Syndicated Radio Personality

His name is Elvis Duran and he's been on the air in New York City out of Z100 since 1989. That in itself is rare these days. But he's also syndicated in cities across the U.S. and is heard by millions of people turning on their radios in the morning in 70 markets.

You might think being live in the biggest media market in the world would mean he'd have a lot of leverage in the Big Apple. But the truth is, many of his shows are done from his home in New Mexico, which could not be more different than NYC.

Still, whatever he does has been working for a long time, with now more than 30 years of radio success under his belt. And like many of us, he caught the radio bug early.

"He even built his own transmitter, with a studio located in his bedroom closet. "My only listener was the lady next door."

Duran's first real radio job came at age 14. After dropping out of college, he spent a decade bouncing between markets across the country. "Back in the old days in radio, you never unpacked, you never took dishes out of boxes, because you were always moving," he said. "But you know what, I've been very lucky. I've been at Z100 since 1989. So, I'm doing okay."

You can see the seven minute-plus video on his radio endeavours at the link below.

Have to admit I'd completely forgotten about that, probably because I never listened to the now defunct station (and could barely get it in the northern part of North York anyway.)

But here's proof.

Sometimes if the signal from WRTS-FM (Star 104) 103.7 from Erie PA is good. I do listen to him once in a while. Depending on the weather conditions. Also his morning show is heard on WAKS Kiss 96.5 in Cleveland OH and WKGS Kiss 106.7 in Rochester NY.
