The All Time Top 40 Moments From 1050 CHUM

In June 1997, the Toronto Star celebrated what was then the just passed 40th anniversary of 1050 GHUM as a rock station.

In honour of the Top 40 format, author Peter Goddard picked the “Top 40” moments from the radio station’s storied history.

Here’s what he chose.

Not that it matters now, but there were a couple of errors in Peter Goddard's article.

# 5. Mr and Mrs. Waters took a vacation to Florida over Christmas 1956 which is where he heard WQAM (a Todd Storz station). After talking with the station, Waters decides to take CHUM's format to Top 40 (really Top 50).

# 9. Bob Laine didn't start at CHUM until April 1958 (one year later than Goddard states). Bob first heard about CHUM on May 27th, 1957 and decided to get into radio. His first job was as a copywriter at CFRS in Simcoe. Bob was with CHUM for 44 years, not 39 as stated in the article.

# 24. CHUM's 'Walking Man' contest was in 1959 not 1960 as stated and while the prize for finding the walking man started at $1000, the final amount awarded decreased to $250.00.

I would demand a retraction! Thanks for the clarifications.

Sorry to be so nit picky about it, even if it was an article 25+ years old.

No, I rather enjoyed the corrections. You may know about the history of the classic CHUM years than anyone else on the planet. Great to have your expertise.
