That time when TV used records...

I was going to post this in the Global Night Ride thread, but it might make an interesting one on it's own.  I've always thought this would make a great BlogTO article, but never put the time into it.

There was a period where TV rather than paying for stock themes would just grab whatever record the producer liked and use it as a theme.  Here's a bunch from the late 70's and early 80's that you might remember.  Feel free to add any other you can think of..

CityPulse @6
Maynard Ferguson - Rocky

Dunno if this should count or not, but this was another Global NewsWeek theme..  Can't remember what it was called, all I remember is it was a piece of DeWolfe stock music.

Re: That time when TV used records...

Many years ago at a Television station I worked for I looped the intro of Night Train by Steve Winwood and played it underneath highlights of the weekend in Sports.  Too good not to use, although we did not have the rights.  Don't ask, Don't tell.

BTW-Love Eminence Front by The Who playing underneath the new Chevrolet commercials.  Perhaps the most underrated song by the band.

Re: That time when TV used records...

It always made me laugh how CityTV would use Neil Diamonds 'America' as it's sign on music.  with lots of shots of sunrises over Toronto n' the like.  It was either someone with my sense of humour or a bizarre choice.

Can't mention all that without this ofcourse
Tommy Ambrose - People City

And the CityTV version used for their Sign Off:

Re: That time when TV used records...

I remember back in the early '80s CHCH News used music from The J.Geils Band for bumpers going into commercials, usually to promote what was coming up in sports. "Come Back" and "Freeze Frame" were commonly used. (I think they may have used "Centerfold" as well, if my memory serves correct). For a while they also used the Talking Heads' "Cross Eyed and Painless", and for the longest time "Once In a Lifetime" was the closing theme for CHCH news.

There was also a talk show on CFTO that used George Benson's "Breezin'" for their theme, but I can't remember which show that was.

Re: That time when TV used records...

Awesome post... definitely brought back some memories!
But, who is going to find this one...  The theme that Maple Leaf Wrestling used to use back in the early 70's on CHCH.
I also believe they used this musical cue on a couple of Gilligan Island episodes too!
Anyone?

Didn't they use "Papa's Got a Brand New Pigbag" by Pigbag, or was that before or after Rush?

'That's it!  I guess it wasn't the same sound cue that they used for Gilligan lifting weights.
Thanks for posting it!  Brings back good times watching wrestling with my Grandfather back in the early 70's.
