While the CBC will handle the technical side of things in the coming federal election debate(s), it will be a face from another network that will host and moderate it - TVO's Steve Paikin. I think that's a pretty solid choice, because I've always found him to be fair and not overly beholden to one party or another.
My only real concern is that Paikin is well known in Ontario, but may be something of a newcomer for those in other parts of the country who don't get to see TVO or hear him during his guest appearances on AM640. Still, he's moderated three past federal debates, so chances are some may remember him from those.
The article below says it's not certain if other networks, like CTV or Global, with carry any of the back-and-forths, but I find it hard to believe they would turn down the opportunity, especially with it looking like two formidable foes who hate each other will be facing off for the top office in the land.

I tend to think it's not really so much the moderator that counts in a debate, but the debate format itself.
Depending on what that is can really influence things.
