Gary Bettman: Next Cdn. Hockey Deal Will Be Less Dependent On Cable

According to NHL President Gary Bettman, when the massive Rogers Canadian Hockey Deal ends after next year, he plans to ensure the games are less and less dependent on cable distribution. It appears he's referring to streaming, as Amazon acquired exclusive rights to Monday Night Hockey, which began running this week.

"The current deal between Sportsnet and the NHL for the broadcast rights to national games is set to expire after the 2025-26 season, and judging by Bettman's comments, it's unlikely Sportsnet can even compete with the potential viewers on a platform like Amazon Prime."

My question: now that Rogers officially owns the Leafs outright, would they allow their prized possession to be taken off their cable cash cow, which they also own? It seems unlikely, but then so did streamers showing live sports once, too.
