It was seven decades ago this week - October 16th, 1954 to be exact - that Elvis Presley made his first of many appearances on a show called "The Louisiana Hayride." It was carried on 190 stations over CBS and at the time, he was hardly the King of anything, let alone rock and roll. 

Even though he made his debut on the infamous Grand Ol' Opry, that first time did not go well and he was essentially told he had no future. 

Then came the Hayride broadcast. Elvis was a sensation on the show and was brought back several times as his fame grew. The hysteria from teenage girls grew, too, and they would eventually go crazy every time he wiggled his hips. And that's when the expression "Elvis has left the building" was coined by show emcee Horace Logan who was trying to stop the screaming and get things back on track. 

All these years later, that phrase lives on, used in a whole bunch of different contexts that has nothing to do with Presley. But it was a radio show that got it started.
