I’ve owned short wave radios for years, but have rarely been able to pull in almost anything on the so-called “long wave” band. But now there’s a rare new addition in existence – and if you’re very lucky, you may soon be able to get it if conditions are right.
It calls itself “Arctic 252, the first longwave band of the Millennium.” It’s designed to cover the vast region of the Arctic and originates in Finland. But it's starting with a very weak signal as it tries hard to finagle a power boost.
From the station’s official website:
“We will begin broadcasting later this year from Inari, Northern Finland with 1kW, we hope to slowly upgrade the power as time goes on. Our goal is a dedicated LW station that will cover most of the Arctic region in the future.”
That “later this year” is September, but whether such a weak signal from so far away will reach these shores remains to be seen. It will broadcast in English and Finnish, among other languages, and it would be quite a catch, especially considering it’s a brand new radio station.
