Another Drain On Corus?

It's a minor one, it would seem, but this story indicates PlutoTV, the online FAST channel that originated in the U.S., isn't exactly attracting a lot of eyeballs down south in this era of free streaming. It's being far overshadowed in terms of viewer numbers by rival TubiTV.

According to Nielsen's latest monthly U.S. TV usage market-share tracker, The Gauge, the FAST accounted for just 0.8% of overall domestic television consumption in June, vs. 0.9% in June of 2023.

Conversely, Fox’s rival FAST service, Tubi, has seen its market share grow from 1.4% to 2% over that same 12-month span, and The Roku Channel has expanded from 1% to 1.5%."

Corus made a big deal of bringing PlutoTV to Canada and has advertised it heavily on its airwaves. Are the numbers the same here? It's harder to get access to those ratings in Canada, but if so, it may be just another gamble for the company that didn't work out as they expected.

Does anyone here watch anything on Pluto? What, if anything, happens to it as the Corus cuts loom?

Re: Another Drain On Corus?

I've downloaded Pluto TV onto several FireTV devices.  Nothing worth watching so far.  By comparison we have a Samsung TV with built-in Samsung FAST TV apps.  There are several channels that we watch, including Blue Ant's "Homeful" channel which has Love it Or List it Australia, and the Architectural Digest channel.  Both are excellent.  Bon Appetit is also full of good content.  Samsung also has dozens of channels with old TV shows, most of which we have no interest in.   I believe that there are a few Canadian news channels on the Samsung Platform.

So content wise, Samsung is the winner - no interest in Pluto.

Re: Another Drain On Corus?

I tried Pluto a couple of times, but the commercial load is crazy heavy with the shows I watched.  Haven't been back.

Re: Another Drain On Corus?

I found that even though Pluto has a fairly good selection of shows on demand, a lot of them only have 1 or 2 seasons available. Makes it hard to binge watch as you don't really want to commit to anything.

I prefer the Roku Channel app. They have a good selection of shows and in most cases all seasons are available. The one drawback I find is that it's not available on devices other than a smart TV in Canada, whereas in the U.S. you can watch it on just about any device.

Nothing a VPN won't cure! I highly recommend them. Not only can you see U.S. stuff, but BBC and ITV in Britain and television from Australia, among others. The VPN comes with a slight cost (I use Nord VPN and find it very dependable) but the shows, once you access them, are free.

Pluto is far better with a VPN

Re: Another Drain On Corus?

I find stations like Pluto sort of like classic hit radio or oldies.  I can listen and watch for a bit, but I still want current and more up to date music or programming.  FAST channels like this would be something I would only watch once in a while, or if I had nothing to do.

If you need a VPN, maybe that's the answer to the question.
How is Pluto TV doing in Canada?
Most likely just as bad as, or worse than the American Pluto if Canadians are adding a VPN into their usage.

Re: Another Drain On Corus?

I like the Canadian Pluto for a few channels only. I like the Love it or list it shows and there is a channel devoted to that. Same with the Property brothers but I have seen many episodes 2-3 times. I also watch Bar Rescue and South Park. Those channels for me are why I watch it.
