Peter Menzies, a former vice-chair of the CRTC, doesn't have a lot of good things to say about how his former organization is handling Canada's stumbling leaps into the new broadcasting frontier, as it tries to implement the Online Streaming Act.
And he's not optimistic things will change anytime soon, even as Canadian broadcasters have their hands out, desperate for the bounty this Brave New World was supposed to bring.
"...since launching its ambitious plan to have the country’s system modernized by the end of this year, the CRTC has dropped two proceedings, added five more and faces three different court challenges related to just two decisions.
How long matters will be delayed while those get resolved is impossible to predict, though Federal Court matters often take the better part of a year. There’s also always the possibility of further appeals to the Supreme Court."
Broadcasting reform in Canada is going as expected – which is to say, badly
