Rogers Renews Law & Order Toronto For Two Seasons

Rogers released their upfronts for the 2024/25 season today and have renewed Law & Order Toronto for two more seasons.  They claim the show was City's biggest hit program in a decade andhad a debut as the #1 show in Canada.  Cheryl Hickey also returns with Tracy Moore as co-hosts for Breakfast Televisions new lifestyle show.  ..https://www.rogerssportsandmedia.com/the-latest/rogers-brings-more-star-power-to-citytv-canadian-hits/

Also today Roger's announced an 11 year agreement with the Edmonton Oilers as their exclusive regional broadcasting partner until 2035. https://www.rogerssportsandmedia.com/the-latest/sportsnet-and-edmonton-oilers-announce-11-year-broadcast-partnership-extension/

Worth noting that, despite slumping ratings, City TV has bought back the Fox "Animation Domination" Sunday night schedule, that includes The Simpsons. In something of a surprise move, the adult cartoon block had been picked up this season by CHCH.

Rogers also renewed Hudson & Rex for season 7 which ensures the show will have years of syndication ahead of it worldwide.  CityNews 24/7 is expanding the news service to Alberta, adding coverage already in Ontario and BC.  And the addition of Shinia Twain on Canada's Got Talent gives the show more star power.  No announcement of another $1 million first prize, but it could be that they are waiting to give the show some hype later in the season.

I am wondering if the Animation Domination block on Sundays performs much better here.  It has been having dreadful ratings on FOX for a long while now.  The real surprise is that FOX brought it back again this season.

L & O: T.O. does not appear to be on the schedule for fall. It will likely appear in mid-season if the pic below put out by Rogers is accurate.

Also, I'm disappointed to see they didn't snag the rights to L&O: Organized Crime, which is going to Peacock in the U.S. It created a four hour block of Law & Order on Thursday nights, and occasionally a U.S.-only streaming service will sell the rights to an original to Canada, especially when that channel isn't available here - which Peacock, isn't.

Also, note that Hudson & Rex will apparently start the season in reruns, with what appears to be three repeat episodes on Sunday nights and another two after hockey on Saturdays.

Glad to see L and O Toronto renewed.  It was improving with each show in season 1.
Although it would be nice if they would tweak the cast a little and bring in at least one fairly well known star.

Hudson & Rex are hour shows. So Saturday evening has one after hockey and Sunday two episodes.

BTW Citytv in Western Canada has been carrying the late HNIC game on Saturdays (or airs a different game if two Canadian teams are playing at 10 PM ET/7 PM PT). Citytv Toronto only airs the early game.

I don't watch it and have never seen an episode, but was under the impression it was a half hour procedural. Still, starting with reruns in the fall isn't exactly ideal, but I suppose they need some extended production time for a 60 min. show.

Also, showing it after a hockey game isn't the best, either, since sporting events almost never end on time and - unless joined in progress - could delay their 11 PM news on those nights. As someone who faced that very scenario too many times, I can tell you the viewers may not care but the newsroom staff that has to stay late hates it!

Bill Brioux writes that L&O: Organized Crime is returning to City TV mid season, along with L&O Toronto.  The show likely is coming back to Peacock at that time since it wasn't in their fall schedule either.  Guess we will need to wait and see.

Re: Rogers Renews Law & Order Toronto For Two Seasons

Well, that is certainly good news. I hope he's right, although Organized Crime is unquestionably the weakest of the L&O franchise. (They've been going through show runners like water almost since it began.) But it will still give those of us who chose to watch it a chance to follow the story. And it gives Rogers a second L&O exclusive in Canada, so a big Thursday night advantage to them.

Peacock has nothing to lose by selling the rights to Canada, since - for the moment at least - Peacock is one of the U.S. streamers Canadians cannot subscribe to. I once spoke to a Peacock rep and she told me they have plans to "one day" make it available here, but she did not say when. That was at least a year or more ago, which tells me they're in no hurry to bring it north of the border - if ever.

Last that I heard, Peacock is only available in the US. They likely want to at least break even before they start any expansion.  So far they have been losing a lot of money.

Re: Rogers Renews Law & Order Toronto For Two Seasons

Expanding to a country with potentially millions of subscribers could only help their bottom line but I'm sure there are hidden costs associated with it.

It's up to them, of course, but it drives me crazy when Canadians are excluded from a myriad of media choices simply because we're north of the border. Although magazines are dwindling in number, there are a few U.S. publications I would like to subscribe to that are not available online.

But no, they won't sell me their editions, even if I'm willing to pay in U.S. funds and cover the cost of postage between the two countries, which considerably ups the price. And it has nothing to do with rights. They say it's not worth it to them, although I maintain if I cover their expenses and then some, they should be willing to send it this way.

Welcome to the new world, where borders have become the equivalent of Fort Knox. How did we get to this point?

In the case of Peacock I am sure they want to see if they are going to be around at all before worrying about expanding.  It's all economics, too many streamers and not enough viewers, and so far Peacock is far from being profitable.   Expanding to Canada where they would need to pay third party rights for a fair bit of programming wouldn't be profitable either.  That's why US streamers usually partner with a Canadian media company.

Peacock's original programming has been with Corus and will be moved to Rogers later in the year.
