It's certainly one of the country's most unusual radio stations - a non-profit that's been on the air since 1924, is now 100 years old - and was broadcasting before the place of its origin was even part of Canada. 

The CBC has the fascinating story of VOWR, a volunteer church-run outlet in St. John's, Newfoundland that despite all the industry turmoil, is still around and thriving in its long time hometown. Newfoundland didn't join Confederation until 1949, meaning the staton precedes that event by some 25 years. 

One other side note not mentioned in the article: VOWR is where CBC-TV's current "Son Of A Critch" shoots its radio scenes, even though that show has some of the main characters working at competitor VOCM.
