FYIMusicNews drew attention to this article from late December in the Vancouver Sun. In a Q&A, Kim Mitchell, the former afternoon drive personality at Q107, reveals his firing after more than a decade hit him hard at first - but he's more than over it.
"I was a radio announcer for 11 years. Do I miss it, no, not at all. It was fun, it was a nice challenge, it was creative, I was treated well, I was let go with class. For about a month I walked around with my tail between my legs going, “Oh, I was just fired.” But then one day I was walking my dog, and I saw three or four guys all in their suits going to work. And I’m like, I’m just going to walk my dog and go home and play guitar. This is all right."
Q&A: Kim Mitchell discusses hearing loss, his back catalogue, and more
I wasn't impressed with them letting him go. I was impressed when they brought in John to 'do' mornings and when they brought in Kim to 'do' afternoons. Mo with John was a great move. After that? Not so much and the music was just so wrong-headed in terms of how it was over-presented. It just wore out. [BURNED OUT] Q...has, more than any other competing station, done the most to knock themselves into the ditch...where they wallow to this day.
They need programming...but for that to happen they'd need ownership. RADIO ownership. CREATIVE radio ownership. Those ships have sailed.
Be well Kim. You started off slowly but by the time they bid you adieu you 'owned it' man.
