Sean Ross is a well known radio consultant who's been around the business forever. In a major column on Radio Insight, he asked some industry veterans what they would do with the stations Bell sold off in mid-minor markets and whether radio is, as one Bell exec. put it, "no longer viable."
Their suggestions range from going hyper-local, not using voice tracking, establishing regional networks and accentuating personality. But the major idea from most of them may surprise you. It's not the on-air staff that counts, they say. It's a well motivated and experienced sales staff.
