Well, this should be fun.
The House of Commons Heritage Committee has ordered the big brass at Bell - including CEO Mirko Bibic - to come to Ottawa on Feb. 29th to answer questions about the mass firings and explain themselves.
Bell has blamed government inaction for the layoffs and sell-offs and it looks like the feds - which have given them financial breaks as they pled poverty - are going to demand an explanation.
Can't wait to hear this one!

Bell's expected response:
"Why didn't you do the things we told you to do? Who do you think runs this country?"

Actually, the article says they were invited to the House of Commons to explain themselves, as opposed to being ordered to.
Does that mean they don't have to show up if they don't feel like it?

Technically, I suppose you're right. But they'd be crazy not to show up.
They're asking for regulatory relief for their news obligations. They're depending on subsidies from the government to keep their stations on the air. They've been given some tax relief (but they claim not enough) to supposedly help fund their newsrooms (hence the anger of the feds) and Bill C-11 was essentially something they wanted, although a lot sooner.
With all that on the agenda, it may be an offer they can't refuse.

February 29th is leap day!!!
It will be LEAP of monumental proportions if anything useful actually comes out of of this hearing, er, friendly discussion by both the Government and BCE...
Q: Has the CRTC been invited to this Heritage Committee hearing on the 29th? just curious...

How much have our food costs gone down since the Grocery chain CEOs were brought on the carpet by this virtue-signalling government? What do they expect Bell to do, hire back thousands of employees and throw their private corporate agenda out the window? Maybe they should focus on getting back some of those tens of millions of dollars flushed down the toilet on ArriveScam, and fire some of their totally incompetent ministers in charge of that boondoggle.

Yep, almost certainly a P.R. exercise, what they call political theatre. There is simply no way to undo what Bell did last week. The execs. will be yelled at and criticized and then go right back to their offices and laugh all the way to the bank.

All three parties (and those who testify) know how the game works. There will undoubtedly be lots of performative outrage, but it serves the purpose of keeping the story alive for far longer than it would have given the public's extremely fleeting attention span. I'll be watching simply to see how the Conservative and NDP members attempt to justify their votes in favour of giving Bell Canada more than $40 million in regulatory relief (which the Liberals opposed), only to have the company turn around for yet another massive layoff.
BTW, have any of you actually used the ArriveCan app? I have and it works great. On our last overseas trip in November 2023, we were off the plane and picking up our bags at Pearson within 20 minutes, thanks to having inputted all of the relevant information into the app prior to landing.

Boneless skinless chicken breast has been on sale for 5 bucks a pound for a few weeks now. I'm SURE it's because of the trip to parliament.
