Bulk Of Google C-18 Money Will Go To Newspapers, Not Broadcasters

The controversial new law will see a cap on how much each kind of news organization will get from Google's $100 million contribution, but it appears broadcasters - and especially the CBC - won't get as much as those who create the printed page and aligned websites.

The official regs are out - the CBC will get "only" a possible $7 million of the $100 million being forced out of Google's wallet. Only in the world of politics is that considered a drop in the bucket!  Either way, broadcasters in general will probably not be happy.

"Since the fund is valued at $100 million in its first year, that means CBC/Radio-Canada’s share is capped at $7 million.

The regulations also limit the share available to broadcasters at 30 per cent, meaning nearly two-thirds (63 per cent) of the entire envelope is reserved for newspapers and digital media platforms."

CBC/Radio-Canada largely excluded, written media outlets receive bulk of funding from Online News Act
