I'd never heard of "Whamageddon" before, but a lot of people in England apparently take it very seriously. So when a disc jockey at a stadium mischievously decided to play "Last Christmas" to the crowd and those watching at home, he wound up pissing off thousands of people across the country.
It's all part of a weird game that's gone viral, dedicated to getting through the Christmas season without ever hearing the Wham song. And it's become a bigger thing than anyone ever realized.
"People have gotten so into it that Fuller’s banned hundreds of its pubs from playing the song until Whamageddon was over. Radio DJs in Europe warn listeners when they are about to play it. Mertz said he heard of a British man who, upon hearing the song while driving, ripped the radio out of his car and threw it out the window."
It doesn't say it in the story, but I've heard the DJ involved has actually been getting death threats for his actions. What is the fuss about? The story explains what happened and the aftermath of playing a simple Xmas tune.
A DJ played ‘Last Christmas’ — and knocked thousands out of ‘Whamageddon’

I play this game. Is it a stupid game? Yes. Is it supposed to be fun? Yes.
If a prank like this is going to make people incensed to the point of death threats, they shouldn't be playing at all. In fact, people that play the game KNOW that part of the challenge is being taken out deliberately by friends, family members, etc.
There are people in the middle that still take it a little too seriously, IMO, but don't go this far. They resort to making sure their Spotify or Alexa playlists can never play the original version of the song (the only version that counts in this game). They make sure they're wearing headphones when they go out shopping or in other public places that play music. Why bother playing, then? The whole point is to try and avoid the song while living your regular life.
Again, it's a dumb game. But it brings people together in online places to have a little bit of fun in the holiday season, post about their near-misses, their take-outs (whether organic or deliberate) and post funny pics of themselves "entering the Halls of Whamhalla." It's a shame to see people sucking the lighthearted fun out of something else.

Waiting for someone on Toronto radio to pose the question to listeners which Christmas song Canadians would choose to avoid as if their lives depended on it...

Seems easy to avoid. Just don't go into a store that has CHFI on the intercom system.
