Looks like an interesting book, but pretty pricey - almost $40! From The National Post:

One of my favourite tomes on this subject is "Behind The Hits," a long-out-of-print book by WCBS-FM jock Bob Shannon, based on one of the segments on his show. A very entertaining read if you can find it.

I'd enjoy a book like that...
Two stories that quickly come to mind...
Tommy Boyce and Bobby Hart were writing songs for the Monkees t.v. show in the 60s when musical director Don Kirshner gave them a phone call and told them he needed a song with a girls name for the program...did they happen to have one handy ?? The answer was yes even though the answer was really no...
Kirshner invited Boyce and Hart over to his office that afternoon and told them to "bring the song about the girl with them"...and it was on the drive over that they wrote the Monkees tune "Valerie"...
One more...Tommy James and the Shondells...Tommy is looking out his hotel room window one night while in New York City and he sees a large flashing red neon sign...showing 4 letters...M-O-N-Y....Mutual (insurance) Of New York... and the rest as they say is history...
