Veteran Buffalo DJ To Retire On Friday

Tom Donahue goes all the way back to the glory days of WKBW, WYSL and WHTT, among others, and has been a fixture on the Buffalo airwaves since 1972. But this Friday, September 29th, he will hang up his headphones for the final time with a last farewell on his current home, WECK.

He has been one of the few constants on Queen City Radio, but believes the time has come to end those brutal morning hours. He's been at WECK for 15 years.

“Program Director Jeff Kaye hired me at WKBW in 1972 and Jeff had always said “you have to respect the business of radio, because as a radio personality, you affect more people in one show than most people do in a lifetime” Donahue concluded [in a statement.]

Tom looks forward to not having to wake up at 3am, which will give him more time to sleep in, and spend more time with his wife of 48 years...his two kids...and his six grandchildren."

Re: Veteran Buffalo DJ To Retire On Friday

Donahue has one last show on Friday before he departs the airwaves for good. The Buffalo News has a fun profile on the radio veteran, including the bizarre story of how Tom McCray became Tom Donahue after he left WKBW.

“They had a guy on named Bob McCray, which was his fake name,” explained Donahue. “So I said, ‘Well, no, I don't want to have people think we're brothers.’ So he said, ‘Well, come up with something.’ I used my middle name then for the first few months. I was Tom Rogers. Don Burns always used to tell me, ‘Oh the son of Buck and Roy.’

“But when I went to WYSL after that, the program director said, 'We don't want you to be Tom Rogers. We have an intro done by this big voice announcer out of Dallas. You can either be Tom Donovan or Tom Donohue.' I said, ‘Well, I'll be Donohue.’”
