Two Legendary New York City Radio Stations Forced To Cut Staff By 12%

WNYC and WQXR, the legendary classical station in the Big Apple, have been forced to shear 12% of their combined work force, another sign of tough times in radio.

WNYC was never really a factor in Toronto, because its 820 AM signal is blocked by CHAM. But many here recall the days of WQXR, a clear channel 50K outlet at 1560 AM, once the much vaunted "Radio Station of the New York Times," and one of the most influential classical stations in North America. Both are now on FM.

Despite being public radio stations, both rely on advertising to at least partially fund themselves. And sadly, while the newspaper has long been out of the mix, the Times they are a changing.
