I've always hated almost everything about September - the end of summer, the beginning of school and the slow decline into winter. The only thing I did like was that it was the beginning of the new TV season and the end of non-stop reruns. 

Streaming has changed that, but this year, there's not that much to look forward to on either, as the writers and actors strikes drag on and on into the new season, with no apparent end in sight. So get ready for my least favourite genre to flourish - reality shows, which don't involve the two main unions and are cheap to produce. 

As the linked article notes, it's a great time to finally catch up on all those shows you saved on your DVR but somehow never got to. 

“In the early days of peak TV, you used to feel like there were so many wonderful shows, and you can’t possibly keep up,” [media professor Mary] Dalton said. These days, “there are so many mediocre shows I don’t want to keep up with them all. It creates time to go back and see the things you may have missed.”  

I've been slowly cleaning out my backlog this past month and from the look of what's coming this fall, I may finally be able to get through everything. (Maybe I'll even get to that series I've been saving since 2014!)

And then what? Well, there are still a few good books I've yet to read. Hopefully, it won't get to the point where there's nothing left to watch, but there's certainly not a lot to look forward to on TV in Fall 2023. And unlike the Covid shutdown of a few years ago, this one may go on even longer.
