August 8 in 1960 and 1962 /The Launch Of Two Historic Radio Stations
It was on August 8 1962 that CHFI FM launched CHFI AM (CFTR). Also on this date in 1960 CHIC-FM signed on in Brampton. This station eventually became the world famous CFNY. More from our friends at RadioWest.ca..

They got it up and running fairly quickly. The permission came in March 1962. They were on the air by August.
Worth noting that when Rogers originally applied for the AM outlet, it was apparently only to promote its existing station. "He [E.S. Rogers] said CHFI-FM hopes to use the AM to promote its FM programs."
There's some discrepancy about when CHFI-AM actually debuted. This contemporary article from 1962 seems to suggest it was July, not August. But most sources indicate it was the latter month.
