It's not the law in the U.S. yet, but the Senate has officially passed the "AM Radio Bill," which would mandate that all cars sold in the country, (including electric vehicles) be forced to keep the band in vehicles. Interesting to note that a Michigan senator voted against the motion and he represents a state where automobile manufacturers reign supreme.
They are against the requirements, noting government has never tried to tell carmakers which entertainment features must be in a car before. There's still a ways to go before this becomes law, but it's telling that many Republicans and Democrats are in rare agreement about the need for it.
"The AM radio bill would direct the Transportation Department to issue regulations mandating AM radio in new vehicles without additional charge...
"Lawmakers say losing AM radio undermines a federal system for delivering key public safety information to the public. The National Association of Broadcasters said the bill "will ensure that the tens of millions of AM radio listeners across the country retain access to local news, diverse community programming and emergency information."
