Is A One Topic Morning Show A Good Idea?

My answer to that question is generally a firm 'no." Especially after listening to a little of AM640's drivetime special on Friday. It was hosted by Alan Carter, in for Greg Brady. Well, he wasn't exactly "in." More realistically, he was out - doing the entire morning run from a relative's cottage up north.

Carter, whom I normally enjoy when he subs for someone, devoted the entire show to cottage life. Subjects like the cost of the properties, the trip to get there, do you mooch time from someone who owns one if you don't, etc. etc. were the topics of the day.

The problem for me? That was the entire show - a new format, all cottage talk all the time. It's an OK topic for a segment, maybe two. But if, like yours truly, it holds zero interest to you, devoting almost four hours to a single subject you don't care about is an instant - and permanent - tune out.

It kind of reminded me of Oakley's ill-fated "special" shows from Canada's Wonderland and Riverdale Farm. Worth an interview, but then get back to the reason you're there. A morning show has a lot of moving parts - news, traffic, weather, topics of interest, etc. When you devote the most important show of your day to a single subject, you risk alienating a lot of your audience who might sit for one segment, but otherwise don't care.

I hope they stop doing this over there. It doesn't work, and it's a tune-out.

Re: Is A One Topic Morning Show A Good Idea?

There is a difference between literally "one topic"
and a topic with several topics within that topic.
So, "cottage life" is not just non stop talk about the level of the water today vs years ago.
It's a variety of things to say.
It's not just the "water level" morning show.
Therefore, I'm sure all is good...but then, also, it may cause those who do not have a cottage to tune out.(?)

*A friend who does not post here points out that the correct term in this case is a ONE FOCUS show, not a one topic show.
It's a focus on cottage life. Something that might deserve a Saturday morning or afternoon weekly show, maybe, as a focus on cottage life, but not a regular morning show program.
There's gardening shows, so why not Cottage life shows?
