I stumbled upon this site from the University of North Texas, of all places. It's a digital library of some of their collection and it's not just books and articles. Included is an incredible treasure trove of interviews and produced shows of a guy named John Gilliland.
Have to admit I'd never heard of him before but research indicates he was a jock who worked in Los Angeles at KRLA and San Diego at KOGO, among other stations. He died in 1988, but he left behind a series of syndicated shows called "Pop Chronicles," that interviewed the music stars of the era and played their music in between.
Those shows are online and the number of people involved is simply breathtaking. Among those captured in separate half hour specials: The Dave Clark Five, Petula Clark, The Bee Gees, John Lennon, The Mamas & The Papas, Sonny & Cher, Bobby Darin, Johnny Rivers, The Hollies, Howlin' Wolf, Rick Nelson, Simon & Garfunkel, Paul McCartney, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, Ian & Sylvia, Jerry Lee Lewis, Mick Jagger & Brian Jones, Nelson Riddle and George Martin.
And that's only a small list. It would take half an hour just to go through the entire menu. Best of all, they're all online, highlighting these classic artists in their youth and at their peak. And it's also divided into decades, meaning there are more from the 50s, 70s, and 90s.
One caveat: the site notes it will be down for a time on July 14th, so if you're reading this then, you might want to try the next day. If nothing else, just going through the list is pretty entertaining. It also comes with text of the shows, which you can follow as you listen. Pretty incredible.
