A listener to the station I volunteer at asked if we could identify the artist responsible for song lyric..He couldn't find it on Google, and neither could I.
"Hitchhiked down to Santa Cruz to see what I could see.
Get some conversation and a drink.
Got the word that Carmen married some cat from Peru.
Looks like this time I will just be passin' through.
Even though it's hard bein' on my own,
Never stay here for long.
Because like a woman of the streets. She comes out to meet me."
The song is very similar to Bobby Bare's "That's How I Got to Memphis", but with a bit of a Cali-Mex trumpet in the chorus. Hope I've been helpful. I haven't heard it in 60 years. Good luck, and thanks.

Hey Dale: I've never heard of that song, but might I suggest you also post this query to the Oldies Music Board? Those guys and gals are great with stuff like this and very often come up with answers to questions that otherwise seemed impossible to answer.

Chat GPT also said, Al Stewart and Collective Soul. Neither are correct.
I apologize for the confusion once again. After further analysis, I couldn't find an exact match for the lyrics you provided. It's possible that the song is from a lesser-known artist or a different context. I apologize for any inconvenience caused, and I appreciate your understanding.

What would have helped, is an old cassette tape (or recording) of even a minute of the song.
Let Google have a listen and something may be found. (or not...)
That's what I do when I find an old cassette tape from YEARS ago (at least 30 years ago) where the tape ended before the radio announcer spoke...
