Numeris Claims AM/FM Listening In Canada Remains High

They no longer give out the ratings, but a Numeris study seems to indicate there are still lots of ears out there, with the majority tuning in when they're away from home.

Radio streaming and tuning stable, says latest Numeris insights release

Re: Numeris Claims AM/FM Listening In Canada Remains High

When I see Dick Taylor, a rather "old minded radio guy" posting this blog a few weeks ago, I think it says EVERYTHING about radio's sad state.  Too many defenders are coming up with stats that show things like "radio has more listeners than ever before", OR "84% of people listen to radio every day"; except that it's once in the clothing store, or for a few seconds in the car, that's quite misleading.

Besides, if that were all true, why would the things Dick Taylor mentions in this blog be happening?  This was a firmly entrenched "radio" guy, and he's saying this?

https://dicktaylorblog.com/2023/05/21/radios-disappearing-act/

I think it warrants some attention.

The stats from Numeris are incredibly misleading, because they're based only on people who are participating in the ratings process. This might have worked fine 30 years ago when almost everyone actually did listen to the radio, but it's a grossly unrepresentative sample today.

Data from Numeris is rather self-serving.  It's only needed for (dare I say "old school") radio and TV type platforms

Streaming services provide instant data about who, and what, is listening (connected).

Is anyone auditing their statistics (the process)?    There is so much room for manipulation, ie.

"Why are you still advertising on CFRB?    No one listens to CFRB.     Look at these numbers for 960 Sauga.   Higher numbers every month and a far cheaper rate" or something along that line .          .   .

Self serving indeed.  Numeris has lost so much credibility since they no longer release radio or tv ratings for public consumption.  Two dying industries that are trying to control the information.  Being secretive or  releasing "happy" information that only serves your members never works.

Surprised that Numeris hasn't figured out if they released the ratings data for radio and tv in a timely fashion (not 8 days after the fact like before for tv) they would actually get more media exposure and awareness for their member stations.

In other countries the release of television and radio ratings is a big deal.  But thanks to Numeris, and it's short sighted members ratings are a big secret and only released if it makes the network or program look like a "winner."

So bogus and sad. Just confirms that Canadian broadcasters don't have a clue how to market themselves.
