SOWNY » Musician and writer Dave Bidini, chimes in on how resiliency helps » May 29, 2020 3:51 pm

If your an artist you might be handling the Covid 19 economic destruction better than one would imagine. The reason is resiliency!

Since you are only as good as your last gig...you need to find out a way to fill the cracks. So, your turn to other means for money.

Voice over work, teaching piano, contractor work, music scores for movies/film, painting wall murals for peoples kids... the list can go on.

Here is more on the article...

What are you doing to make a little extra mula right now? Are you getting more creative as well? Or are you like fuck it, this CERB life style is rocking it for me.

SOWNY » TIFF and the Kensington Market Jazz Fest » May 28, 2020 6:16 pm

Peter Howell writes in the Toronto Star about what TIFF will look like this year...there hasn't been a lot of content being produced since March and that might be the case into the summer too by the looks of things...but this is another possible "pivot" in a long line of event cancellations and changes...

Here is the link to read more... looks like the only celebrity you might meet on the red carpet is the illustrator for Pixar's latest animation...

Here's what is planned for the Kensington Market Jazz Fest.

SOWNY » A new station arrives in North Bay...not new but an Oldies format » May 28, 2020 1:41 pm

Nice to see some expansion in these times...as North Bay just got granted a new Oldies format station. Vista Radio is going after the older market with this one...as the music will be from the 50's, 60's and 70's.

Rogers tried to block the move, but the CRTC agreed to the license and Vista put a good business case together too!

So, if you are looking for a gig, you might have to make a big move North, but this is good news to see.

SOWNY » These times aren't so funny, seriously they aren't funny, here's why » May 26, 2020 2:54 pm

Comedy, be it live comedy, Just for Laugh's festivals, clubs, TV show specials...is a bust these days. The comedy industry is big business and a growing concern in Canada.

Especially when comedy is needed during these times...my "Facebook Friend" Jeremy Hotz, has done some comedy on Facebook live...but that's about it.

Industries, need to come together collectively and re-vamp how the business model works moving forward.

Here is more on this story...

What I am wondering is why musicians or comedians haven't made more changes as yet. Why doesn't a local musician in my area doesn't go outside at noon and play for 30 minutes, put out a donation bucket and give passersby (keeping a distance) a little something happy to experience.

I expect necessity will be the mother of invention.

Since many sports are still trying to figure it out, this article suggests that sports broadcasting might resort to video game versions...I mean how many times can one watch re-rolls?

Here is the article, what do you think? Could this fly for the time being? I can see it now, Tim and Sid interview some kid in Ancaster who is killing it with his video baseball game!

SOWNY » CTV to air a show Friday to support Kids Help Phone w. Rogen & Cara » May 20, 2020 6:37 pm

Seth Rogen and Alessia Cara host a special "Unsinkable Youth" to help kids who are struggling right now. I just spoke to my neighbours kids and they're a bit despondent, confused and unsure about school, life with their friends, camp etc. this summer...

CTV is spearheading a star, sports star, music star studded cast to support Canadian Youth on May 22nd.

Here's more about this initiative and a group of the population who are also feeling edgy too these days.

I mean being isolated with Mom and Dad, having to listen to classical music on CBC 2, with no late night privileges and no dating is and can be a fate worse than death...

I can safely say that teens and young adult Canadians don't want to be all in this together in the same boat. They want to be in their own boat...drifting freely...

Here's more on this event on Friday night...

Okay, it is the first annual all 80's long weekend...back then we all had hair and plenty of it...for women, we had shoulder pads and big hair...but the music wasn't bad either...we had punk, rock, yacht rock (Christopher Cross), dance music, syntho-pop, new wave and jazz...

So, what were your top 5 (this time)...80's faves?

This is a time of Reaganomics, Presidential assassination attempts, Lennon got killed, Tylenol was tampered with, the New Coke was a "bomb", Lee Iacoca saved Chrysler, Trudeau lost, then won again, the Berlin Wall came down, the Blue Jays got into the playoffs, the Leafs became competitive, the "Skydome" opened, Roger, Rick and Marilyn hit the morning airwaves, CFNY was cool and MuchMusic almost killed the radio star...but not quite...

TV shows included Family Ties, Cheers, the ending of Mash, Miami Vice, Night Court,  Magnum P.I. Moonlighting, Cosby Show and Canada's own Night Heat, The Littlest Hobo and the Kids in the Hall too!

So, here are my top 5 faves from the 80's

1. Making plans for Nigel- XTC
2. Everybody wants to Rule the World-Tears for Fears
3. Working with Fire and Steel-China Crisis
4. The Way it is- Bruce Hornsby
5. She sells Sanctuary-The Cult...

Honourable mentions to Brian Ferry, Ian Dury, Flock of Seagulls, Asia (I know), Fine Young Cannibals, New Order, Violent Femmes , Erasure, Tom Tom Club, David Byrne, REM...the list continues
There are so many more...and I loved to Q107  (Scruff Connors took over from Ted Woloshyn) then by 1983 I became a big fan of CFNY, Pete and Geets, David Marsden and even Mike Stafford back then too!

So, it's your turn!

Go!

This story deserves a little applause (I think)...but leave it to the Porn Industry to lead the way in Covid testing that will allow production to resume.

In fact, they are doing testing in a way that will allow more traditional film and TV production to also take place.

I love the CFL, as a kid growing up in Ottawa, I would sleep, eat and breathe football and the then Ottawa Rough Riders, heck Russ Jackson was the vice principal at the High School my sister went to. (Sir John A. MacDonald).

When I was 10 I lost my dad and that very sister a few years later was dating a guy who was friends with TE Rhome Nixon, I got to meet him and some of the other Rough Riders at the time in of all places attending practice.

This was 2-3 years after losing my dad and man, Rhome Nixon a U.S. born player took me under his wing and I got to attend practices, have fried chicken in the dressing room after and hang out. I got to meet Art Green, Rudy Sims, Art Cantrelle, Hugh Oldham and one day after a game, I got to go back to Rhome Nixon's apartment for a post game party, I got a ride home by CFL Hall of Famer, Condredge Holloway, turns out I lived a 15 minute bike ride away from Mr. Nixon #74 with the Ottawa Rough Riders, he even caught a TD pass in the 73 Grey Cup win.

We stayed in touch until 1975 when he got traded to the BC Lions...but he was a mentor and a true class act. I was the luckiest kid to hang out at practices and even watch a game from the sidelines.

A high school buddy of mine was the "Water Boy" for the team when they won the 76 Grey Cup on the Tony Gabriel catch from Tom Clements.

Plus 4 years ago I got to see the RedBlacks win the Grey Cup here in Toronto...it was like Christmas Day!

For these reasons alone, I have loved the CFL, I played football too in High School and later in my 40's and early 50's I would visit Ottawa to see family (I am a Toronto guy now)...and would work out at GoodLife Fitness on Pinecrest by the Queensway and who did I meet each time? But the former coach, George Brancato, we'd talk regularly about those times and I went to High School in Ottawa with his kids...

So, joke as you may, but in my family the CFL is about family, fun, healing and Golden Palace Egg Rolls after a game!

(Drops the mic

SOWNY » It is the weekend and time to play "This or That"!!! » May 9, 2020 7:53 am

It is Saturday the weekend has arrived and it is time to play This or That...this is similar to the sports way of choosing the "Play of the Month".

The object of this game is to choose between two songs the first to choose the best of 2 songs presented, carries on the game with the song they chose and then add one they love even better...

For example if I post Led Zeppelin and a song by Justin Bieber, then the next person to see my post, chooses the song they like best and posts that plus one song of their own...

At the end of the weekend we will see which song is still standing...or what play of the week (so to speak) is the last one that seems to have outlasted the others...

Ideally, we're sharing our fave songs. These can be any genre and from any time period...are you ready?

Let's play, "THIS OR THAT"!

Oh and have a good weekend!

Here are my two:

Now, the first person to see this post, selects one of the two and adds one of their faves... by Sunday Night' let's see who is still standing!

Cheers everyone!

This photo-op of Adele, stepping out to give thanks to medical front line workers and talk it up with fans (from a distance), has sparked a lot of eye balls, she seems a bit trimmer and showing off some legs...in a black mini-skirt.

P.S. When her hit song (Rolling in the Deep) came out 5-6 years ago I loved it...but boy did radio ever over-do it and after about the 6th week, I began to scream "Turn it off", I mean I couldn't tolerate it anymore and the only other song that had that effect on me was Seasons in the Sun, by Terry Jacks and that was Cancon too!
