I had a look on the inter-webbing thingy yesterday. The TTR is available for purchase but unfortunately only for Region 2. One would have to buy a UK DVD player and a North American power supply to watch it

One of the best shows on their sked. is Still Standing. Funny, clever and you learn something about some place in Canada. It could easily be a hour long.

Do call letters really serve any end purpose now? They are not used in most parts of the world. Maybe keep them around for governmental administrative purposes but to the average listener they are superfluous.

Bell if you don’t want to run radio and TV stations then sell them off to a company that will try. It’s better than slowing bleeding them. During these times, the listeners need all the information they can get. You are not helping

“In the beginning”  cable TV was MATV. That is to say, it was a master antenna system. It was to bring TV signals into ones home. For instance if you lived in the GTA, you could not watch CFTO on ch. 9 and cable 9 a the same time. It would ghost. Hence “channel 9 cable 8”.

Today I am sure coax cabling standards are much tighter. Remember in many homes, internet comes through the the cable system.

Also keep in mind that CFTO is now on RF 8.

I know this is not directly broadcast related but it was touched on in RA's excellent year end summary. Will many of us continue to work form home after this mess is [hopefully] over. My sister and I talked about this just last night.

As environmentally friendly as it is, working from home is not socially healthy. We are interactive beings. When we are 'at the office' we interact consciously or sub-consciously. Zoom and Teams meetings do not cut it. In the 'good old times' when your in a meeting and you cut in to make a point, the meeting direction changes. There is interaction and a cohesive decision is made.

Human interaction is slowly dissolving now.  I worked from home in March and April. I ended up hating it. I am actually looking forward to going back to the office tomorrow.

To work from home, stay at home, see the same people day in and day out 7 days a week will ultimately not work out. The kids and teenagers hate it and so should we.

Very good info.  Question on this, some independent stations back in the day especially 50k watts and up had several bays.  I remember CHAY in Barrie before they had a master fm system installed on the VR Tower was 100,000 watts omni and a 10 bay system.   The lower the power the less bays.   How come?

The less the power, the less metal you need in the air - AM or FM. That being said, you can pump low power into an antenna capable of high power. But not the other way around.
AM - those CBC 40 repeaters only use a long wire between two polls about 100' feet up. They are not capable of much more. Those 1000w AM stations in Mississauga such just use one short poll. A 50kW station would need a big tower [for omni-directional] or several towers [for directional]
FM - you see those big arrays as noted above. CJMB in Peterborough at 175w just has a small two bay antenna.

Now that this is going ahead, it brings up some interesting questions:
Channels 23 and 27 will be freed up in the GTA. Will they be taken up by other broadcasters?
What will happen to the 1000ft tower in Vennachar?

People in Bancroft with average antennas will not be able to pull in CHEX or CKWS. The are not high powered enough. Maybe if the viewer was on a hill....

Corus Entertainment was granted permission today to shut down 2 high power and 2 low power repeaters. Disappearing are:
-ch. 2 Bancroft [high power]
-ch. 23 Brighton [low power]
-ch. 27 Cobourg [high power]
-ch. 28 Prescott [low power]

Instead the signals that are going dark will be multiplexed on Global Kingston, Ottawa and Peterborough. The decision is here:

Well RA, since you asked... Concerning Ontario:
CHCH in North Bay, Sudbury, Timmins and SSM. CTV in the same 4 cities plus Kapuskasing and Kearns/Kirkland Lake - the later of which is scheduled to shut down a year from now. It is a full powered [325kW] ch. 11. Also Pembroke's CHRO is still on the air on out-of-band ch. 5

If they wanted to do something productive, turn off all the AM's that also have similar coverage on FM, thereby creating less interference to other AMs. Heck, many stations down there don't even acknowledge they have an AM frequency!

It will not work. It will just disenchant current listeners. Propagation will also not aid a digital station.I read a story about a AM station down there that flipped to all digital. Listeners thought it went off air and moved to listen to their FM repeater. They have since returned the AM station to pure analog
