I received a CNN Breaking News email at 8:41 pm about this.

During the last five minutes of Anderson Cooper's show,  Chris Cuomo commented on the story before his own show began; (said it was "many years ago").

SOWNY » Media Bloodletting At Rogers: A Brief History » September 4, 2019 6:12 pm

@RA...I didn't post the link to defend Rogers...far from it!

It caught my eye because it shows that financial ineptitude seems to be a chronic problem.  As to how they treated (still) their talent;  I am in total agreement with your take.

SOWNY » Media Bloodletting At Rogers: A Brief History » September 4, 2019 1:22 pm

Another look at this from Bruce Dowbiggen.  It looks like many are now paying the price for monies spent on more than just the actual NHL contract.

@RA...Damned if I know!

While a self admitted Luddite,  I do accept that social media and the so called "non-traditional" platforms are the future.  That said however, I cannot for the life of me comprehend how a small You Tube sole availability will lead to a new viewing demographic?

Are these traditionally games that would not be televised no matter what anyway?
Or were actual games pulled from the intent to be televised?

Wasn't there a time when select games were radio only games anyway? Aren't these few games the same games?

These games would otherwise be televised.

The initiative comes straight from MLB and the Commissioner is a strong supporter of it.  The games are selected by MLB and the teams and their broadcast partners have no say.  Last year when there were complaints after the first Blue Jays game was announced,  Manfred while in Toronto took the rare step of criticizing (without mentioning names) Rogers brass who were voicing unhappiness with the arrangement.

Doug Maclean also confirmed in this article that he too will not be returning.

SN is just gutting its' talent across the board.

That's being polite.  I live in a condo in Brooklin facing west with no buildings next to me;  and I still cannot receive the signal from either my second floor balcony or in my car driving west on Highway 7.  That map is a crock!

Yeah,  I had a similar reaction.

On a different note,  we posted earlier about TSN broadcasting Overdrive without any effort to advertise the fact.

With Prime Time Sports on SN,  becoming just another radio show;  you would think that TSN might want to make a push for more viewers.  I watched Overdrive last week as I couldn't stomach the 590 mid-day hosts who had the show for the week; and others had told me that I should give TSN a try.   I'm bringing this up because at 6:00 pm with an hour still to go,  Brian Hayes reminded viewers to switch to TSN 1050 or go online as the last hour is not broadcast on TV even though they have 5 TSN channels all showing the same program. With such a limited AM signal they should be maximising viewership options.

Agreed!

While a lifelong "small c" conservative myself,  who nontheless hates the move to the "extreme right" by some elements;  Coren has indeed not stood still.  It takes a deliberate decision to walk the many steps he has made to the left,  in order to support Justin & co. after a lifetime of criticicizing the Liberal Party and its platforms and policies.

It's not really annoying, just troubling. I heard my first "Let's Go To The Ex" spot on Wednesday. Anyone who's grown up anywhere near Toronto knows what that means - the end of summer is nigh.

I swear that if Albert Einstein was still with us, he could prove beyond a scientific doubt that time speeds up in the summer. Wasn't it just May two days ago?

Anyway, just noting that this annual commercial fills me with melancholy every year as I contemplate another winter ahead. Every year, I call it my "Abraham, Martin & John" summer - I just looked around and it was gone.

Heard the ads myself in recent days.  Although decades away from a classroom,  I too still have the same reaction now as back then.

I am an old time radio buff and I find it quite refreshing to be able to tune in to a sampling from radio's
golden age.  Surely for CHML to devote 3 hours per day to OTR is quite acceptable since 21 hours are given over to news and talk, much of which is just mundane chatter.  I'm sure that there are many others out there who also enjoy hearing OTR again. Kudos to CHML and AM 740 for keeping OTR alive!

My sentiments exactly.  I checked out the website and they have quite a selection of shows.

I agree with your sentiment cash;  but I don't believe they have a choice.  Last year it was Facebook and now YouTube.  This online streaming is an MLB initiative with the games assigned and participation mandatory.

I will ask the question.  do the tax credits and media funds weigh the allocation money based on the relevance of subject matter to Canadians, or based on the number of jobs created nationally?

I know I'll draw criticism for this, but here goes.

While not a fan of most Tax Credits and "Funds" (media or otherwise);  if they are to exist then I am looking for a defined monetary benefit to the community at large.  Business contracts obtained by Canadian companies, local residents employed, monies pumped back into the community via purchases by these companies and their employees and last but not least...decent paying jobs in an era where long term employment is not an option for many.

I am a proud Canadian, but if Government Funds are to be used then let them at least have a tangible benefit.  Canada is here to stay and its existence isn't doesn't depend on regulatory required content.
