Earlier this year, I received notification from Bell that their copper network would no longer work in my area as of May 31, and that I'd have to switch to fibre (which I did). I wouldn't be surprised if their call centre people have been told that this is the only answer they're supposed to give to anyone with a problem who's still on the copper network.

It was done by radio stations themselves with the spoken-word interlude of We Built This City, and I think CHUM and/or CFTR did it here. But I don't remember this too well, because I'd switch the station whenever I could as soon as it came on.

It was called "much", and it was shown on the record labels in the same style that "chum" was shown on the CHUM Chart.

Yes, my recollection is that it was when the general minimum was raised to 35%, that the CRTC made provision for stations broadcasting mostly pre-1981 music to apply for a minimum of 30% instead.

I think this editing and speeding up of songs in the early 70's is way exaggerated and didn't happen that much. The CRTC also said in the early 70's that songs had to be played in their entirety after some stations attempted to skirt around the rules.
Weekends between 6 and 9 CHUM no way played 30 songs per hour. Saturday morning had reasonably good ratings and would often have a full log of commercials along with news and sports. There may have been some editing of songs at some stations early in cancon, but it was not wide spread and didn't last long.
If it were true, there should be airchecks floating around and I have never heard any. Also artists and record companies would have complained and gone to the CRTC or possibly threatened lawsuits if it was widespread on stations and over a long term.
I was in radio in the 70's, and it never happened anywhere I worked and we only heard some rumours of this happening but very little if any proof.I wasn't working in radio at the time but as a listener I can confidently say CHUM was stacking Can-Con during the early morning hours on weekends. At one point I did notice some edited versions being played but that practice didn't last too long.
CFTR was rumoured at one time in their history to slightly speed upthe songs. This allowed them to fit an extra tune or two into each hour allowing them to claim that they played more music per hour than anyone else. Clever idea if it happened.
I remember hearing about CFTR doing that as well, and I felt that it was enough to be slightly noticeable -- but not enough to be problematic except for people who really wanted to hear songs the way that they were recorded. I was actually in that camp, but had to admit that the songs still sounded fine and that it was clever on their part.
Re CHUM, I based my estimate on how much the edited versions were shortened, and I recall hearing so many songs during those hours that

Although I'm normally not one to defend the CRTC when it comes to Cancon, I can understand them stating that Canadian songs must be broadcast in their entirety. It would be because of radio stations editing Canadian songs to remove verses and choruses in the 1970s. On CHUM, I think that such versions were only played on weekends between 6 am and 9 am, when they'd stack them to the point that they probably got in around 30 each hour. That allowed them to play more 1950s and 1960s non-Cancon hits during the rest of the day on their "Million Dollar Weekends".
As for the pre-1981 reference, I think that it reflects the shifting of the oldies era over time. On the Oldies Music Bulletin Board that preceded the one I administer now, I think I recall seeing the moderator (the late Chicago area broadcaster Ron Smith) say that he considered the era to go from the mid-1950s to the early 1970s -- but he allowed messages about music from the 1950s to the 1970s in general. I think that it also makes sense to have it go up to 1980 here to allow stations to have much more in the way of Cancon hits to choose from.

I heard that, too, but my impression after a few listens was the part where they say "I hear music" in the chorus that it sounds almost exactly like "When Will I Be Loved" by the Everly Brothers (and later by Linda Ronstadt.)
Maybe it's just me, but once that comparison was in my head, I couldn't hear it any other way. (Although as some here will tell you, there's not much else in my head to begin with, so there's that!)
It reminded me more of "I Can Hear Music" ... I could also see why you thought of "When Will I Be Loved", but I'm not sure I could have come up with that if I hadn't seen your comment. Interesting song.
SOWNY » Is This Really Why There Are No NFL Games On TV On Friday? » May 14, 2023 9:04 am |
Yes, I used to think that it was strange that the NFL had so many of its games on Sundays until I found out about that act. Here's what Wikipedia has about this at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NFL_regular_season:
Also in 1961, the U.S. Congress passed the Sports Broadcasting Act in response to a court decision which ruled that the NFL's method of negotiating television broadcasting rights violated antitrust laws. The law allows the league to sell the rights to all regular season and postseason games to the networks, but prohibits the league from directly competing with high school and college football games. Since high school and college teams typically play games on Friday and Saturday, respectively, the NFL cannot hold games on those days until those seasons generally end in mid-December.

At https://www.thestar.com/authors.phillips_andrew.html, the Star states that he was once the editor of their editorial page, but that he is now a staff columnist for their Opinion page. I think that's an important distinction, in that he may now be expressing opinions there that could be different from the editorial position of the Star itself.

Olliver had indeed left Mandala to form his own group by 1968. From https://www.troianomusic.com/mandala.html:
The group's debut single stormed into the Toronto top 10 in February 1967 and was quickly followed by another top 10 success, "Give & Take" c/w "From Toronto '67," which was released three months later. In June, Mandala returned to New York to play one off dates at Steve Paul's the Scene and the Action House. Around this time, the band also reportedly began work on an album but it was never finished and Mandala's line up soon underwent several important personnel changes.
During late September, singer George Olliver quit the group in frustration and formed his own band, the Children.

That show was part of The Who's first North American tour, and it was set up when they were just having their first North American top 40 hit with "Happy Jack". So it definitely was a case of Herman's Hermits being the bigger act at the time, but yes, it certainly is very odd to see this in hindsight.

What I found odd about this article was the references to 50 years, when as you say it's been more than that -- the current lineup having been together since 1966 and releasing their first single in 1967, making it either 56 or 57 years in the business. I did a search and found a 2019 article referencing them being together for 50 years at https://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/calgary/the-stampeders-hit-the-road-jack-to-mark-50-years-of-rock-and-roll-1.5153101, and also one from 2022 at https://themusicexpress.ca/stampeders-continue-to-roll/ that also references their touring being disrupted for two years by the pandemic. So it would seem that they've been doing a 50th anniversary tour for the last several years. This also led me to look at the tour page on their site at https://thestampeders.com/tour, which shows that they toured in Ontario from Mar. 24 to May 1 last year and then moved on to playing consecutive dates in other parts of the country. So this year their focus, at least for the time being, is on the Prairie Provinces instead.

Bell’s FM stations occupy one floor above, with CHUM-FM (104.5) taking pride of place in the corner studio with a million-dollar Toronto streetscape view. There’s at least one remnant of 1331 Yonge here: the sign on the studio door reading “Through this door passes the finest air staff in the world” was moved over here along with CHUM in 2009.

I'm helping research the early years of The Tragically Hip for their official documentary currently in the works (directed by Mike Downie).
We're having trouble locating a recording of an important show in their story: the Toronto Music Awards (Massey Hall, 1988-11-11)
It seems all formal sources trashed their copies years ago, but it was broadcast live on Q107. If anyone knows someone who might have taped if off the radio back then, I would love to hear from you. Thanks in advance!

I watched that show every day myself. Although I could tell that it wasn't of great quality even at the age of 10, tv reception at my house wasn't good before cable because of us being near the Gatineau hydro corridor -- and so CFTO was the only channel that came in clearly for us. But I liked both Nyland and Weston, and wasn't surprised to find out later that they were both talented actors trapped in a bad show. And yes, her husband was indeed AM740's Frank Proctor.

Joel Whitburn's The Billboard Book of Top 40 Hits shows an "[ I ]" for records that he classifies as instrumentals. It has one for The Hustle and Rock & Roll Part 2, but not for Pump Up The Volume or Paranoimia. I don't know how he would have classified the other two songs since they didn't make the top 40, but I always find it interesting to see what he indicates for songs like that. Most notable for me is that Silver Convention's Fly Robin Fly is classified as instrumental, but Get Up And Boogie isn't ... I realize that the singing in Fly Robin Fly is more limited, but I still don't think of it as being an instrumental.

Theme From S.W.A.T. was done originally by Rhythm Heritage and they had the hit in the US with it, but the Canadian group THP Orchestra covered it and they had the hit version here. TSOP (The Sound of Philadelphia) was a hit for MFSB with The Three Degrees. The Love Unlimited Orchestra had a big instrumental hit with Love's Theme.

I remember hearing Different Worlds, the theme from Angie, on one station here ... I'm thinking it was CKFM, but it could have been CHFI. It did give her a minor comeback hit in 1979, making it to #18 on Billboard's Hot 100 and #1 AC.
I only heard it on CHML in Hamilton. It was the late summer of 1979, and we were living in Selkirk. Mom was driving us to school in a new 1980 Citation.
Just looked up her discography on Wikipedia to see if had chart positions for Canada ... they show that it was #1 AC here as well, but only #48 pop. That certainly fits with both of us only hearing it on one station.
