SOWNY » Jazz FM has a morning show host » October 12, 2021 8:36 pm

The mornings went host-less during the tumultuous times of the Ross Porter, toxic board of directors times, 3 years ago...and finally last week, Heather Bambrick is now hosting the morning show, from 7-11 am.

Former traffic reporter (Skywards) Raina Hersh is the mid-day host from 11-2. I find Raina, to be bubbly and nice to listen to.

I know Jazz FM doesn't get a big response, but for a donor supported station, they do a lot with a little.

SOWNY » He finally lost...Matt Amodio's streak stops at 38 » October 12, 2021 8:31 pm

I found it fascinating to watch Mat Amodio go, however after the 20th win, and his annoying "What is" answers, plus the fact we steam rolled over every contestant, I didn't mind seeing the streat end.

He amassed 1.5 million U.S. and there were times, my mind was boggled by how much he knew for his young age. He was brilliant.

My question to the board is, do you like these kinds of winning streaks? Or do you find it get's tiring? Should they cap the wins?

Curious as to what the replies will be.

SOWNY » Also on Labour Day Sunday, Glen Woodcock hit the 45 year mark @ JazzFM » September 9, 2021 4:08 pm

Glen Woodcock, has now been host of the Big Band Show on Sunday nights for 45 years at Jazz FM

This is pretty darn good in a time where some hosts come and go...45 years on one show and he doesn't sound bored, or tired of it, he still loves the music, the stories and the history. Considering much of Big Band music came during WWII.

Or with artists like Dizzy and Louie Armstrong and Myles,  coming out of the history of Black music artists in times that were not very kind.

Here is more on this story via Milkman Unlimited.

SOWNY » The Olympics TV ratings held their own » August 11, 2021 6:35 am

According to the CBC website, the ratings for digital viewers were quite impressive and 3 in 4 Canadians were tuning in on ther TV side.

Summer is a slow viewing time, and imagine people tuned in just because it was the best thing on air, in case you don't watch the Partridge Family re-runs on CHCH...

Now, CBC is reporting on itself, but still in a games that lacked fans and that extra "energy" that fans bring to it...these ratings aren't half bad.

I think it helped that the Canadian team had their highest medal count and some key Gold medals to be proud of too!

Here is the report...

SOWNY » David Marston aka James Baby Scott of CFNY fame passed away last week » August 10, 2021 7:55 pm

David  AKA "James Baby Scott" the former drive home guy on CFNY in it's hay day, passed away last week.

He had an influence on so many people in the biz and was quite the "promotions" idea guy too!

I first heard of this on Walter Venafro's show on Jazz FM last Saturday and Walter paid tribute to James Scott as having been a huge influence on his radio career.

Here is more on the story...and may he rest in peace. I was a CFNY die hard back then...(Pete and Geets, David Marsden and yes even Mike Stafford)...

One of the shows I listen to as I work from home has an announcer that encourages the Covid Protocol each day, this week, they are now suggesting to get the jab!

Is that a wise move and is it even ethical of an influencer with an audience, to suggest they get the vaccination?

To me there are some who are opposed and some are open to it. Does it not put those who are opposed to having this treatment plan at risk of tuning in elsewhere?

My question is this really. Should a host use their influence on air, to strongly urge listeners to do get the "shot"?

Intuitively, I say no!  That those listening have choice and those who choose not too right now, well, you might lose that listener base.

I feel an announcer is there to entertain, inform, educate, but not to be a spokesperson for the medical community in Ontario.

To me it is a slippery slope.

SOWNY » Here is a broadcast career limiting move, by ESPN's Paul Pierce! » April 6, 2021 7:19 am

NBA analyst and baller turned broadcaster Paul Pierce has lost his position at ESPN for video of him out using the services of a few Exotic Dancers, given the climate we're in now, this may be hard to overcome as far as a career in sports media goes.

What is your take on this? Would you hire someone who had a flagrant foul off the court like this? Do you turn the other cheek and bring him in as a ratings play?

Comment away!

In the meantime here is more on the story.

SOWNY » Podcast Radio launches in the UK, when will it arrive in Canada? » April 5, 2021 7:39 am

Podcast Radio you say? Not yet in Canada? Mmm...Pity!

Yes Podcast radio has arrived in the UK...24 hours of programming the best of the best podcasts and it seems to have legs, financial backing and some success so far too.

The question is, will this work in Canada? Who of the big broadcast companies might take a stab at doing something similar?

SOWNY » Former music guy and MP Andrew Cash, lands a new gig at CIMA » April 2, 2021 5:29 pm

If you were at the Horseshoe back in the 80's chances are you'd see guys like Dave Bidini or Andrew Cash Play. It was a cool time for musicians in the "6".

Andrew Cash went on to become an NDP MP in the Davenport area and now, with his political career in the rearview mirror, he just took on a new role as the head of the Canadian Independent Music Association.

It is a pivotal time in the music biz and from what I read, Cash intends to take Canada's musicians into some new directions.

SOWNY » The Star writes about the Shaw/Rogers merger pointing to higher prices » April 1, 2021 9:12 am

This report in today's Toronto Star, shows how Shaw backed down from their pro-competition rhetoric last year and succumbed to the Roger's merger...this ultimately will allow the big 3 to raise prices that will directly affect the pocketbooks of all Canadians.

Without competition, Bell, Rogers and Telus have carte blanche as to how much they can charge and it is not cheap!

Here is the article, feel free to share your comments and ideas.

SOWNY » Did Any Radio Or TV Station Do This Story On Wednesday? » April 1, 2021 9:08 am

The timing of this is insensitive in a year where so many have been rocked by the pandemic financially. It is part of the "Great Reset" and I am certain that governments around the world don't have our best interests at heart.

Here is what's affected by this tax, oh and Netflix pricing goes up as will Spotify too...

SOWNY » Sauga 960 continues to add to it's pretty solid programming » March 26, 2021 5:09 pm

Sauga 960 adds a new show for sports enthusiasts...North Pole Hoops airs starting April 10th. This show augments their play-by-play of the Raptors 905 games and the show focuses on Canada's Amateur Basketball scene.

This country has been putting out some fabulous ballers over the past few years and for those who follow the sport closely, can probably get an up close look at Canada's future stars.

It is hosted by Jason Thom who is on the Raptor's 905 broadcasts and drops in on the morning show with Richards and Bastl too!

Here is more on the story!

I had my doubts about this station too a few years ago, but not any more, they are very niched in their offering and yet their broad range of shows offer some cool listening alternatives.

SOWNY » We lost one of Canada's best creative ad men » March 20, 2021 7:36 pm

When I first started in Radio, I was in the ad sales end of it...and I remember listening to the Radio Advertising Bureau's award winning ads...they sent us an ad kit and a cassette of the ads that jumped out at me were produced, voiced and or written by Syd Kessler.

The 2 ads I loved listening to was for Downtown Cellular, Syd did a Abbott and Costello bit to advertise this Cantel (Now Rogers) of those ads is heard at about the 14 minute mark on the video reel below...

Another was for the Chinese Food/Deli mashup restaurant Ginsberg and fact in the video below, at 5:22 you will hear a few of those ads. He also wrote the Pizza Nova Commercial too (4-3-9- 0-0-0-0 Pizza Nova)!!!

Being new in the business, these ads were funny, creative, catchy and "Kitschy" too.

Syd also headed up Supercorp back in the day. He went on to a few business ventures and about 20+ years ago I went to visit him at his office, he showed me a new ad technology, it was virtual reality...3D edge and brilliant.

Syd was super creative. He was a mystic (Studying at the Kabbalah Centre in Toronto), a magician, business owner, author, speaker...

He passed away at the beginning of March...below is a nice write up and tribute and I also featured a reel of some of his work, give it a listen, it will bring back radio memories...and TV memories too, as there are ads for YTV and CBC TV too  (after the 10 minute mark in the video)

SOWNY » Ex TSN Vancouver hosts arrive on CHEK TV in Victoria » March 17, 2021 6:28 pm

Toronto sports talk peeps will know the name Don Taylor from his Sportsnet TV days, he and Rick Dhaliwal got turfed by TSN (or astro-turfed) February and in similar fashion to former BC sports talk show host Rob Fai, Donnie and Dhali have landed on an independent TV station(CHEK TV) in Victoria BC.

They are hosting a 2 hour mid morning sports talk show, called Donnie and Dhali...this is 2 examples of downsized TSN Vancouver hosts landing a gig on more alternative mediums.

This begs the question, what needs to happen to have locally owned, independent media to really offer a a viable alternative.

I was speaking with former Chum guy (Benji Karch) today and he's now at Durham Radio and some staffers equate that group of stations to the early, creative, free form days of Chum-fm...

How can we make it advantageous for independently owned TV and radio stations to succeed and grow in this country?

Here is more on Donnie and Dhali's new gig...the show is called The Team.

SOWNY » Bob McCown, sounding like he hasn't missed a beat » March 16, 2021 6:25 am

I am wondering if anyone took time to listen to Bob McCown and John Shannon on Sauga 960 last night? I did and I was back on air.

He hasn't missed a beat and even used some of his old sayings like, "if if's and and's were candies and nuts we'd all have a Merry Christmas". John Morosi was guest and they talked baseball and the Blue Jays upcoming season. It was a fast hour and what I didn't realize is that he will be on each day Monday to Friday.

This has potential for sure.

Good move Sauga really have stepped up to the plate.

If you listened in, what were your thoughts?

Will this change your listening habits a little?

Will you make the move up or down the dial?

Share away.

SOWNY » Got the boot from TSN? Why not join an up and coming streaming channel » March 12, 2021 9:29 pm

Rob Fai got the boot when TSN Vancouver, made some cuts back in February, since then he is broadcasting on a Surrey BC Video Streaming Channel called Hubcast, it is has a cool look to the set, and along with co-host Jeff Paterson, they are hosting a hockey show, called the "Nation" and it is drawing an audience too.

Peter Young owns the venture and has brought on former BC Lion executive Scott Ackles as the CRO (Chief Revenue Officer).

There are plans to expand on multiple online platforms in the near future and, perhaps this can be the antidote for any other broadcaster to find work in the business they still love.

Here is more on the story. It is nice to end the week with some hope.
