Though saddened to hear of Mike Filey's passing, the news of it caused me to do a google search on him and I discovered the Mike Filey's Toronto Podcast, apparently only available on TuneIn and was originally on Zoomer Radio 740.   It goes from late Sept 2012 to July 2013. I've read almost all of his articles and look forward to giving it a listen.   RIP Mike Filey.

SOWNY » Do You Still Have A Battery Operated Radio At Home? » July 9, 2022 12:11 am

My Motorola smart phone works as an FM radio using the plugin ear phone as an antenna.   My home internet was affected but I use Freedom Mobile for my smart phone so I was able to tether the connection to my PC.   The speed was fine until about 10 AM while out on my run, the streaming of TuneIn, Google Podcasts and so on gradually grew slower as more and more Rogers customers with Freedom cell / data like me started tethering and by 11 AM, the speed was slower than the old dial up days.     Using the FM radio app really helped to keep updated while I was out.    It's too bad the app isn't AM radio ready, just for FM, but I also use it to receive the announcing commentary at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park when I'm there for races as they broadcast locally at 90.7 at the track.

It's more their entire approach these days.    With few exceptions, they lack the depth they used to have.    Their coverage of many issues has been little more than sound bytes.    Even their reporting of the COVID numbers lacks context, seemingly shouting big numbers every day without perspective or analysis has been the rule.   For example, until recently the 7-day rolling average number of cases was the most relevant and the best they do is avoid that and read raw numbers from a PowerPoint slide.   Increasing?  Decreasing?  They can't be bothered to say.   Anybody who has done presentations knows that's the way to bore people to death.

I sat back and watched the story of the "Freedom Convoy" unfold last night.    Roger's Adrian Ghobrial did an excellent report on it.  He covered the donations troubles, the appearance of extremist groups hijacking it,  mentioned how the USA is asking the same,  did interviews and even had experts from academia giving their views!    Meanwhile, over at CFTO, one of the most experienced reporters in the game, Austin Delaney, just gave me a "what they say" microphone in the gob of some boob report, at some kind of location outdoors of course.      What a let down.       Bell has fallen big, especially when one of their finest reporters ends up delivering crap like that.   And I don't blame him.   He's great.

I wish they had more experts and fewer unqualified opinions on the round table, while at times it sounds like some participants weren't given an advance heads up on the subject matter because they have nothing to say but their mouths open and words come out nonetheless.    I not expecting much more from the 640 version.

Ryan Reynolds Promotes Mint Mobile With Hilarious ‘Winnie The Screwed’ Bedtime Story

Ryan Reynolds just dropped a beary funny new ad for Mint Mobile.

The “Deadpool” actor, who became the owner of the company back in 2019, put his own spin on “Winnie the Pooh” while telling the tale of “Winnie the Screwed” and his big wireless bill.

“Yesterday the original book featuring Winnie-the-Pooh entered the public domain,” explained the actor and businessman.

“Took some creative liberties but it sticks pretty close to the source material. Just added @MintMobile and changed ‘honey’ to ‘money’ really.”

While narrating the hilarious video, Reynolds reads from a book that says, “Like anyone with a big wireless plan, Winnie-the-Screwed just wants to keep some of his sweet sweet money, but his money jar gets emptier and emptier with every monthly bill.”

Promoting his company’s latest deal, he adds, “So I told Christopher Robin that anyone can get 3 free months of Mint Mobile now until Friday at midnight.”

Reynolds previously enlisted the help of Satan himself to help with another Mint Mobile campaign.

I won't delve that far.   My Yamaha RX-V800 is from 2002.   Does a great job and has a great "crap detector".   So when the audio is 1980's style Dolby 3.1 Surround when it should be Dolby Digital, I get it!    Heck, even old Law & Order episodes from 2005 are in Dolby 5.1!   So, I'm confident that something is going on behind the scene to have crappy audio.   I have no idea why.

Hollywood Suite on cable (a Jay Switzer idea) shows many, but not all movies with Dolby 3.1/Pro Logic instead of Dolby 5.1 or DTS.   The audio sucks!

Recently I upgraded to a Rogers 4k NextBox (I love trailing edge) for $20 a month and I'm getting free 4k programming.  It's great content, except that the audio is Dolby 3.1/Pro Logic!   Old technology that sounds like shit compared to normal OTA / cable which is Dolby 5.1 digital!

Why do they do this?        They did the same with Hollywood Suite movies!

My theory is that it's a bad marketing ploy!       Hold back the good stuff!  Yeah right.

I can go one better with the phone calls.   The one I received was getting notices on my screen when ever the old recipient was getting a call, I had their logs and the ability to send to voicemail, ect!   I contacted Rogers, they reset the box and it only lasted 2 days before I got another call alert.   I just turned off the notification setting on channel 975 and am done with it.     I'll reset the box another time.

I can live without CNN, but when I had to choose with Rogers between CNN and the CBC's Documentary Station, my $2.00 went to CNN.    I still get Fox News and all the rest by streaming, but who has time for truck loads of bullshit from south of the border?   I can barely stand CNN!    To think, it was about 40 year-ago that I met a gal at a party and mentioned CNN, an all news network.  No, we weren't sleeping together.  But she agreed that such an idea would be watchable.    Duran Duran isn't on the charts and CNN has changed.   They used to cover shit like toddlers caught in water wells back in 1987, then came 1990!   Just type in "Scud Stud" to find a famous Canadian broadcaster.    Times have changed since then.

I don't like all soccer, but I like Woman's soccer because, unlike the Canadian Men, Canada has been kicking ass since 2000.     Otherwise, I compare soccer to ice hockey.   And soccer always loses because the rules are stupid when it comes down to deciding the win.     I was pleased to understand that Australia, The USA and Canada call it Soccer, but only because we have other versions already called "Football".

(I have to renegotiate a new deal in January...wish me luck!)

That's worth investigating for sure but they are always pushing ignite instead of offering much in the way of deals on the old school PVRs.   I literally swapped 3 HDD's in and out of the old model but the drives were hard to find because they don't use SATA tech, just the old 40 pin PATA and adapters won't work.   The SARA software was actually more versatile in the old model too.   No manual recording or setting it to record a activity later in the time slot in the Nextbox, which would be great for CBC Olympic coverage because it runs 6 hours at times.

My SA8300HD set top DVR purchased December 2009 died last week and I instantly replaced it with a rental Nextbox 3.0 4K picked up at a Rogers Store on Yonge last Friday, rents for $18 a month or purchase $500.  Since they're phasing out Nextbox tech to Ignite, I'm renting for the foreseeable future.   It also removes any tie I'd have with Rogers over owning one of their boxes, so it's more flexible.   So they are available at stores.   Several I checked had them in stock.

Since  the first AZ trial was after last summer and partially held in Brazil and the UK where two of the more dangerous variants originated, while Pfizer / Moderna trials were held in the USA during last summer, most probably against the original version (referred to as "wild"), the AZ has been "battle tested" under tougher conditions so it has a lower efficacy percentage.  Subsequent AZ trials have also been later and against variants of concern (like the recent one in the USA), unlike Pfizer / Moderna (so they got a higher percentage than AZ).   Don't let the lower efficacy number mislead you into believing the AZ vaccine is any less effective when in fact it's proven against the more virulent variants while the other's numbers were against a milder form of the virus.

Very unhappy, though, with this 4 months between shots idiocy that no other country on the planet thinks is a good idea.

I had mine March 15 at a Shoppers.  No side effects at all, and now at 3 weeks I've reached maximum protection until the booster.   AZs vaccine reaches maximum effectiveness after the booster is given 12 weeks in, so I'm fine with that too.   It was tough getting the appointment but there was no shortage of local pharmacies offering the shot in midtown Toronto.

I recommend that you check out this short video to clear up the evident misconceptions about vaccine efficacy.   Too many people rely on a simple vaccine efficacy percentage to compare vaccines and that's incorrect.       Vaccine efficacy comes from vaccine trials and it's rare that different vaccines are trialed under the same circumstances.    The AZ vaccine for instance rates lower because it was tested under entirely different circumstances than the Pfizer or Moderna.      Why you can't compare Covid-19 vaccines

I'm at episode 8 of 10 and I wouldn't recommend it.   The first two episodes were well written, good plots and featured some recognizable actors;  then it all fell apart.   Episodes 3 - 7 have been some of the stupidest, poorly  written "C" movie garbage I've ever seen!    Even the sets were recognizably  low grade.  One of the 4 had Jenna Elfman and Chris Meloni in it, but the writing made it almost unbearable.    It's almost like they ran out of money and tried to limp across the finish line.    I'm unsure if I'll finish the rest.    I switched to Condor season 2 and it was a breath of fresh air.    Fair warning.
