Thanks for sharing.

Looking at the London market I was interested in seeing the ratings for CJBK and CKOT.

I have said something like this about AM radio. A town without an AM station is a town without a soul.

Interesting story. Thanks for posting.

I bet the big three stations were peeved when this happened.

You've gotta at least give PAX some credit for their chutzpah!

No luck receiving the signal in the Grand Bend / London area. I'll try again after sunset. Are they testing 24 / 7 or is it limited hours?

I think it would be interesting to see how the Buffalo stations do in the Toronto ratings. I am sure some of them would do better than TSN1050. At one time, CHUM FM, Q107, EDGE102 and CKFM showed up, admittedly not very high, in the Buffalo ratings. I believe now the numbers don't get published unless you subscribe to the service. I have noticed that CKLW no longer shows up in the Detroit market numbers. At least according to stationratings.com.

I think Arbitron stopped listing Windsor stations 3 or 4 years ago. And I am not sure if Numeris/BBM has ever listed Buffalo listenership. I do know that CIDR (The River), CIMX (New Rock 89X) and even CKWW would show up in the Arbitrons for Detroit. Rock 89X being the strongest. Since CKLW is more or less all Windsor/Essex county talk and news  they were rarely showing up.

Last ratings in Toronto was showing about 93.5% local share hours tuned  total encoded radio.  Buffalo radio would be included in the 6.5% share, hours tuned for out of town. Not exact but gives a rough idea, Aaron would know more about this.

I know several guys in Detroit that listen to "Coast to Coast" on CKLW as it is not carried on any other local stations, but that's about all they listen to.

I'm glad you're excited mace. I've done the Numeris diaries two or three times. Completed them faithfully and accurately; even providing a separate page of what I considered constructive comments. Unfortunately, it did not help. Two shows I used to regularly listen to "The Talk Show" on CHOK 1070 and "The Andrew Lawton Show" on CFPL 980 have both been dropped. It seems if I like a show its destined for cancellation.

I commented on the lack of of live / local / innovative content on the stations in my area. Things have only gotten worse; other stations I used to listen to like CJBK 1290 and CKOT FM have increased automation, reduced compelling programming and or adopted cookie cutter music format to the extent there is no reason to listen. I love radio and it makes me sad to say I rarely listen to any of the local stations in the Southern Ontario area. Even in the car I tune around and many times turn the radio off.

Good luck and have fun with the diary, maybe your contribution will make a difference.

Fitz: Thanks for posting the test signal. It's great to hear the 1220 signal from St. Catharines is back on air.

I believe it was the end of September 2010 when the transmitter was silenced. I bet it was no small job to restore the functionality of that 9 tower array. Especially this time of the year.

I wish them much success.

I know this is out of the geographic area of this forum but here goes.

Quite often I am up late and listen to Marcia Campbell's 'The All-Nighter' radio show. It runs from midnight to 5:30 AM central time. Last night the show was replaced with automation. Checking WSM's website all references to the show and host have been eliminated. We usually know what that means.

Using the usual search engines I cannot find any references or stories relating to the show being cancelled. I suspect cost cutting took its toll but cannot confirm this. Parts of Marcia's show focused on overnight truckers. With its big signal and satellite radio carriage I thought the show had decent ratings. I last listened about two weeks ago.

If WSM has cancelled and replaced with automation this will end the era where WSM was live (mostly) 24 hours a day on weekdays. Weekends have been semi automated for a long time.

Anyone come across any information on this?

Reviewing the comments at the end the the story; the CBC claims they made the cuts in 2014 after they purchased the rights to the movie. The reason was to accommodate the broadcast time slot. In 2014 Mr. Trump was not as 'controversial' as he is today. Apparently 8 minutes were cut from the movie; scenes other than the Trump one were also eliminated.

If the 2014 story is true one could accept this explanation as a benign act, however I have no way of fact checking the accuracy of CBC's explanation.

I'm pretty skeptical of anything I hear on / from the CBC. In this case I will give them the benefit of the doubt.

paterson1: Thanks so much for the info. I did not know know Sparton was in the record business.

A couple of years ago I drove by what I presumed was their factory / plant located on (of course) Sparton St. in London. The site is located within a residential area and the aging facility was about half a city block long, not sure what occupied it, but there was some kind of operation there with several cars in the parking lot etc.

Thanks for the history lesson; you sure know your stuff.

And we can't forget about Electrohome in Kitchener, Northern Electric, and Canadian General Electric who also produced table top radios in Canada after the war. All of them would later start to produce televisions around 1949/1950 with Electrohome being the most successful. Electrohome was Canada's largest TV manufacturer from 1949 until 1984 and in the 70's exported their colour TV's to 23 different countries. If you travelled to the then Kennedy Space Centre in Florida or Mission Control in Houston in the 1970's, many of the colour TV monitors used by NASA were manufactured by Electrohome.

Thanks for bringing up Electrohome.

That was quite a place; the Electrohome factory on Wellington St. in Kitchener. I got my first ever job as a cleaner there in 1974. They were building colour TV's and some stereo equipment. Electohome made their first foray into high end stereo and quad gear. Anyone remember the brand name "Planar"?

Muffaraw Joe: those radios where the time flipped in shutters were known as flip clocks. I loved them too. They still have a following today. Do a search and you will likely come across a site called flip clock fans. I still have a few that work.

Nice to see other broadcasters helping out.

Like paterson1 stated, they will be able to receive CFOS 560 from Owen Sound at least through the day; that station sure gets out to the north. Not sure about night time coverage.

I wonder if Mr. Timmermans can seek any redress through the insurer of the truck that caused the power outage / surge?
